NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Herbert was admitted to the Duke of York Military School at Chelsea, on 30 May 1907, four days after his 11th birthday. He registered with "A" company and was given the number 12395. The register shows he was a "Mender", and was a very good swimmer. He was discharged on 18 Oct 1910 and joined the Royal Horse Artillery.

The school moved to Dover in 1909. For further details of the DoYMS visit Duke of York Military School.
Thanks to Art Cockerill & Peter Goble for above details.

Herbert survived the battles at the Somme, during the 1st World War, and is said to have laid mines during the 2nd World War. During his military service, he is thought to have earned 5 or 6 medals, which were sold in the 60's or 70's.

Between the wars, he was involved with carpentry, and had several jobs, including working on the rifle ranges at Hayling Island. He is said to have spent much of his married life away from home.

Before his death, in 1941, he had been on crutches, either the result of a motorbike accident, or after falling off the roof of a garage in Drayton (now owned by Derek Warwick). He then had a fit and was rushed to Havant hospital, where he died shortly after. His family were then living at Hayling Island.

Death: Gosport (district), Jun 1941 - 2b 1436

Herbert William Bridgen, 14, Military

The PRO shows the Medal records for a Hebert Bridgen, but it is not yet confirmed that he is Herbert William (my grandfather). A photo existed of him dressed in the uniform of the Royal Horse Artillery, but its present whereabouts are unknown. In 1930, Herbert William was a driver in 76 Battery 9th Brigade Royal Artillery. As they were both drivers, it is possible this is the same person.

The details on his medal card are:
Name: Herbert Bridgen
Service No: T/291020
Driver in Army Service Corps Driver
Roll: RASC/101B(or D)204 - Page: 20943

These medals were issued to all who served in the 1st world war. See: here for images and details.

NOTES:
Dorothy's marriage certificate shows her father as WILLIAM HIBDIGE, Fitter. He was not present at the wedding. It is possible that William Owen Hibdige was actually her grandfather, but raised her as his own child. She recalls that she lived at Bridgemary with a housekeeper until about five, and then moved to an old house in Fareham. The housekeeper was probably her mother, Eliza, who was a housekeeper for William Owen Hibdige in 1901. Eliza died in 1908, so it was probably then when she and her brother went to live with William Owen Hibdige. However, she also believes that she and her brother were put in a foster home until William married again in 1921. They later moved to a newly built house in Earl's Road, Fareham.

She believes that an "uncle", who lived in a posh house just south of the Hoeford Inn, shot himself in the head, when she was about 8 years old (c.1914). They were not allowed near him. This appears to be William Hibdige, son of William Owen Hibdige, as all the others have been accounted for.

She also claims that Les Crosswell, bought her first house for her and Herbert, after they married. Les was a son-in-law of Harriet Jane Colwell, who became Dorothy's step-mother when she married William Owen Hibdige in 1921.

Les Crosswell married Harriett's daughter, Violet Combes, who was also known as Jane. She was raised with Dorothy and the two remained very close until a silly argument, possibly in the 60's. Vi was never short of cash and often helped Dorothy out. Apparently, she visited Dorothy unannounced with some clothes for her. Dorothy was just going out and Vi was very put out at her wasted journey. The two argued and never spoke again.

Dorothy worked at Air Speed in Portsmouth, where one of her best pals was Kath Major. They spent several holidays in the Channel Islands and were strong supporters of Portsmouth Football Club.

After retiring, she lived with her daughter, Betty.

Via family research, contact was made with a cousin Robert Hibdige. He looked after Dorothy's brother, Jack, until he died. He had photos of Jack, and also one of her father standing by the tram he used to drive about 1890. Armed with this new knowledge, and copies of the photos, I paid her a visit, but discovered she had been taken to hospital earlier that day. By the time I arrived at the hospital, she was already in a coma. She died within a few days, unaware of what I had discovered.

Florence Grimshaw (nee Thornton)

Probable Birth: Jun 1872 - Thornton Florence Huddersfield 9a 389

NOTE: It seems most likely that Florence was a daughter of Emily and her first husband, William Robert Thornton. She is shown on the 1881 census at the bottom of the household.

Florence's father probably left England between 1882 - 1891 to work on the railways in India. He probably took Emily and the 4 children, or they may have left shortly after him. None of the family are found on census returns after 1881, except sons Harry & John, who probably came back between 1891 - 1901 to study engineering at a university in Leeds, Yorkshire.

ABODES:
1873 ..... Huddersfield, Yorks. - (Birth)
1881 ..... 4 Whitestone Rd, Grove Building, Huddersfield, Yorks. - (Census)
After 1881 - Probably India.

Possible Marriage: Sep 1897
Brown William Leeds 9b 711
GRIMSHAW Florence Leeds 9b 711
GROVER Madeline Jane Leeds 9b 711
Smith Henry Leeds 9b 711
NOTE: Madeline married Henry SMITH, so Florence must have married William BROWN. The 1901 Census shows a William & Florence Brown (both aged 29 and born Leeds) living in Headingly-cum-Burley. This is where Florence's brothers were both lodging in 1901. However, also living with Wiliam & Florence is Lavinia Sugden, Sister-in-law, Unmarried, aged 35. This suggests that Florence's maiden name was SUGDEN.
