NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Harry Clayton Grimshaw

ABODES
1880 ..... Huddersfield, Yorkshire
Between 1881 - 1901 ..... Probably India
1907 ..... Wrangthorn, Yorkshire (marriage)

Harry's father probably left England between 1882 - 1891 to work on the railways in India. He probably took Emily and the 4 children, or they may have left shortly after him. None of the family are found on census returns after 1881, except Harry & his brother John, who probably came back between 1891 - 1901 to study engineering at a university in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Harry is said to have returned to India, probably soon after his marriage in 1907, as no children were found with a mother named BAXTER. His sister-in-law, Jessie Roberts, has said that he had daughters in who lived in India.

It is not yet known when he returned to England, but photographs show him in Selby, Yorkshire in 1930, although he may have just been on a visit to his wife's family. He is said to have moved to Selby from Cambridge during the war, after heavy bombing forced many people to leave the area.

Another Roberts family were living in Ringwood at the time Samuel & Ann had their children. They were Stephen & Sarah, who had a child named Samuel and other similar names. Stephen was possibly a son of Stephen & Martha Thorne, who married at Compton Abbas, Dorset in 1785. They had several children, including a Samuel, but he was Christened at Compton Abbas in 1806. This Samuel has now been ruled out. He is found in Winchester with a wife, Jane, and 3 children, in 1851.

A Samuel Roberts married Mary Baker in Compton Abbas on 25 Jul 1815; Witnessed by Thomas Baker & Sophia Andrews. Could Mary have had a middle name of Ann, and used this name after the marriage? The marriage would be 2 years before Samuel & Ann had their first child.

Maria Clark

In 1841, Maria was a teenage servant girl living on Burgate Farm, in Burgate, Hampshire. Her future husband, William Roberts, was a labourer on a neighbouring farm. She married him 4 years later on Christmas Day 1845, at Fisherton Anger, Wiltshire.

It appears that, after William's death, in 1867, she moved back with the family of Thomas Kent, where she lived in 1841. In 1871 she is shown as a nurse, probably to Thomas Kent's new baby, Walter. In 1881 she has moved to Clapham, London, and is living in the same road as Walter Kent and his sisters.

It seems likely that Thomas Kent died between 1871-81, and his wife, Emma, moved to London with her children and Maria.
