NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

William Walker

Notes from Ron Cox
In Feb 1916, William's wife wrote to her parents to say that William's employers had tried to get him exempted from military service. The appeal failed and William later served in the 294th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery. He may have been a "founder member", as it was formed at Harwich on 1 Nov 1916. They moved to Ewshot, Hants, and then Lydd, Kent, for final training before joining the BEF in France. Annie posted four postcards from Lydd, showing the nature of William's work, including four 6" howitzers which the battery took to France. They embarked at Southampton on 28 & 30 Mar 1917. It is thought they joined the 98th Brigade, RGA in Jan 1918.

William was killed in Action on 21 Mar 1918, on the first day of the German Spring Offensive, aged 28. He is interred in Grave 13, Row D, Plot 4 at Fins Cemetery (see below). The village of Fins is 25km East of the place on the Somme battlefield where his brother-in-law, Harold Gilbert, was left for dead in Jun 1916.

Charles Hugh Edward Bath

Notes from Ron Cox's "Gilbert Family", page 77
Charlie was 21 at the time of marriage (1912) and was an engineer's clerk, possibly employed by his father, a civil engineer. He later became one of His Majesty's Inspectors of Schools. He was called up for military service and given a job in the war office.

In 1926, it seems that Charlie's father was deemed dead and he became entitled to claim his father's estate, but then the father re-appeared. Correspondance between Charles and his brother-in-law, Harold Gilbert, suggests that Charles' father returned to Spain where he would not be recognised. Thus enabling Charles to claim the estate.

He divorced Elsie in 1932, due to her infidelity. It is not known if the above fraud played any role in the divorce.

Charles was a Roman Catholic.

A full account of the above details will appear later.

Elsie Gilbert

Elsie became a Red Cross nurse during the 1st World War. She and Charlie were divorced in 1932. The grounds were complicated, like much of their married life.

About 1940, Elsie was photgraphed with a male friend, Mr Veysey or Voysey. He is several inches shorter than Elsie and is shown wearing a huge Trilby hat. She later lived with a very pleasant chap named Alec, who was of Polish origin. He changed his surname to Elsie's married name, Bath. Elsie stated that she had always been lucky with educated men.
