NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

James Russell

Notes from Tim Gray (Great Grandson):
A leading Shakespearian Actor. Oxberry's Dramatic Biography, and Histrionic anecdotes, Vol.V11, printed and published by Duncombe,19, Little Queen Street, Holborn, London, in 1825, were provided by The Folger Shakespeare Library, 201 East Capitol Street, Washington,D.C. (Georgianna Ziegler, PhD).
"He was, we are informed, intended for the medical profession ; Apothecaries Hall, however had no charms for him, and he was resolved to play Doctor Ollipod on the stage rather than in the real world. We know not, for certain, whether he ever commenced a career of physics ; at all events we find him, at the age of eighteen, enrolled among the dramatic company of that most delightful of all sea-ports, Sheerness.
The first Character which our hero played in public was that of Hogmore, in 'Who wants a Guinea' ; -- he was from the first looked upon as a very promising young actor, but his efforts in 'Monsieur La Rolle, in 'The Young Hussar', considerably advanced him in the opinion of his manager, although we know not if there resulted from such enlarged valuation, any very important rise of salary. In fact, Mr Russell was considered a very great acquisition to the theatre........"
After Sheerness, he travelled to Sunderland and Durham with great success and "then succeeded the late lamented Mr Knight, at the York Theatre, where our hero remained for four years. From York he was engaged at Edinburgh - engaged to play before the most fastidious people of ths play-going world, a people, which Kean condemned as being, in his own words, 'cold-blooded enough to spoil an actor.' Mr Russell appeared in the modern Athens with good success, and for some time maintained a very elevated situation in the theatre. We positively know that he may ' rank among his list of friends,' the great Sir Walter Scott, having frequently had the honour of making a visit to him, and of even, at the special request of the baronet, sitting for his portrait as the Clown in Twelfth Night, which portrait a short time back adorned the walls of Abbotsford.
"From Edinburgh, he came to the English Opera House, where he made a successful appearance as Peter in 'Up all Night.' He has since played at Covent Garden and the Haymarket; at the former house,it will be in the recollection of our readers, as a candidate of tragic fame. With the Dublin audience Mr Russell may also boast the best understanding. The fame of Mr Russell as an active, intelligent actor, is in every way well merited. In his eccentrics there is a shrewdness, a pungency, as it were, which makes them distinct characters. In opposition to these we may instance his admiraable portrait of 'Dandie Dinmont'. Our readers will,no doubt, sufficiently estimate the ability of Mr Russell, when we give it as our opinion that his 'Dandie' is the next to Emery's ; - there is so much boisterous honesty and heartiness in the rough farmer, unalloyed by stage-trick, or hankering after effect. In addition to his comic laurels, may also be considered a few bright leaves from the tragic muse. When we consider the opposite line of character so long indulged by Mr Russell, we must allow his 'Shylock' to be an effort of considerable talent, developing many admirable perceptions of the actor.

Mr Russell is at the present time (1825) engaged at Drury Lane, and as a man and a gentleman, we know of no individual throughout the profession who possesses a more enviable combination of moral rectitude and acquired talent."

JAMES died on 13 Jul 1859 age 70 at Pembroke Square, Kensington. Cause of death was 'Disease of Kidneys and Bladder'. Informant was his son Edwin Wensley Russell, present at the death, of Pembroke Square, Kensington.

Imformation from Janet Tyson:
Another report states that James debut in London at the English Opera House, June 15 1816 and died in 1859, aged 73 years, although he was not listed as deceased on his son, Edwin's, marriage certificate 1865. However, we now know he died before 1861, as Emma is shown to be a widow on the 1861 census at 16 Mornington Road, Pancras, London.

It seems there are two contrasting dates recorded for James' birth: the Catalogue of Dramatic Portraits (Harvard UP, 1932) lists him as dying in 1859, aged 73, which places his birth in either 1785 or 1786, rather than 1789 (J. P. Wearing, source).

The Theatre Museum in London has playbills for James' roles as Peter in Up All Night (English Opera House/Lyceum, 15 Jun 1816) emphasizing his first appearance in London, having just finished at Edinburgh (see playbill); The Sleepwalker (Haymarket, 22 July 1818); Twelfth Night (Covent Garden, 6 Jan 1819); and The Agreeable Surprise (Haymarket, 13 Jul 1820).

Another playbill shows James performing at Drury Lane on 10 Dec 1831, playing Shekel, in The Bride of Ludgate. It is interesting to note that the first performance that evening was for The Barber of Seville, where Marcellina was being played by certain "Miss Russell." This could be Emma Wensley, using her husband's name.

The following is a passage from Chapter 4 of "Old Mort" by Sir Walter Scott: http://www.blackmask.com/books60c/oldmort.htm
.... Here are news come that the Archbishop of St Andrews has been strangely and foully assassinated by a body of the rebel whigs, who pursued and stopped his carriage on Magus-Muir, near the town of St Andrews, dragged him out, and dispatched him with their swords and daggers." [Note: The general account of this act of assassination is to be found in all histories of the period. A more particular narrative may be found in the words of one of the actors, James Russell, in the Appendix to Kirkton's History of the Church of Scotland, published by Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe, Esquire. 4to, Edinburgh, 1817.]

As James was a friend of Sir Walter this could be the same person. The book can be found at Glasgow University: Click Here

Emma Wensley

Notes by Tim Gray (Gt Gt Grandson) & Janet Tyson:
The Catalogue of Engraved Dramatic Portraits from the Harvard Theatre Collection says of her that she debuted at Covent Garden on 11th January 1820 with a suggested birth date of 1799.

It seems she played the role of Rosalind in As You Like It, but was simply credited as "a young lady"!

A playbill is available from the Theatre Museum in London.

EMMA died on 25 Feb 1873 age 74 at Nazareth House, Hammersmith. Cause of death was 'Paralysis'. She was referred to as 'Widow of James Russell - an Actor'.

Notes from Elizabeth Kohlhoff (descendant of Emma's aunt Elizabeth Wensley):
William's Will, proved 14 Sep 1849, mentions daughter, Emma, wife of James Russell esq.

From Felix Farley's Bristol Journal 1829 - notes made by Elizabeth's cousin, Evelyn, before finding William's will. "It appears that a Miss Wensley was an actress (in Shakespeare), she performed here at the Bristol Theatre. The critics were not very kind. One said she should take six months off & go & learn her job. Another said her voice was thin & whining, & her Rosalind too soft. Another said perhaps she should stick to the comedies of Shakespeare rather than the tragedies, but added that she showed promise!. All of which rather annoyed her father, Mr Wensley who wrote the paper defending his daughter who had made her debut at Covent Garden."

Elizabeth's cousin, Evelyn, also found the following at Somerset House, London:
Rev Francis Drake Foster died 23.9.1882, formerly of Dodington, Glos., later of Wells, Somerset. Personal estate £5,537. A lot of his estate went to his niece, Caroline Margaret Woods, but he also left something to Edwin & William Russell. Emma Wensley's sons perhaps?

Further research (not yet confirmed), suggests that, according to the 1841 Census, Emma and her two children were found to be living with her father William Wensley.

William Wensley, Linen Draper, became a Burgess for that he was the son of Lawrence Wensley, Linen Draper - 27 Apr 1784

William's Will, proved 14 Sep 1849, mentions daughter, Emma, wife of James Russell esq.

A "William Wensley" was appointed churchwarden of St Pauls at Easter 1798. Their children, Frances and Maria, were baptised there. Maria was also buried there, aged 10, but no record of Emma has been found. William & Frances appear as sponsors to a couple of the children of James Chubb & Elizabeth Wensley. James left hundreds of little pages of diaries (now in Truro Record Office). There are only a few references to Mr & Mrs Wensley, but there is a detailed chart of his children's births, baptisms, sponsors.

Capt. Richard Howson Lamb

Richard was baptised at Southwark (London) as shown on the 1851 & 1871 Census. However, the 1861 Census shows his birthplace as Sandford, Westmorland (Lake District). This is 4 miles from Brough, where his assumed father was born. It is also only 2 miles from Warcop, where another Michael was born in 1756 to a William & Mary. However, he died the following year.

Richard's parents are almost certainly Michael Lamb & Jane Howson, who married at Shoreditch, London in 1784. Michael & Jane appear to be buried at Brough, Westmorland, along with Michael's brother, John. HOWEVER, it is not yet proven that this is the same Michael & Jane.

Richard ended his days at Bragborough Hall, Braunston, Northants. The church at Braunston has stained glass windows dedicated to Richard, his wife, and their son-in-law Alfred Butler Clough (d.1870) who was vicar there for 32 years.

Frances (See Notes)

NOTE: Frances was 8 years younger, so could be a second wife of Richard's, and may not be the mother of his children. However, they did have a daughter named Frances, so she probably was their mother. She could be a relative of John G. Stevenson of Lincolnshire, whom she was staying with in 1871. A William Stephenson was living next door in 1871.

Samuel Fearon Debenham

1841 Census: Corn Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
Samuel Debenham, 65, Confectioner, b. Not Suffolk
Lucy Debenham, 65, b. Suffolk
William Gibbs, 25, Baker's Servant, b. Suffolk
Samuel Merton, 15, Male Servant, b. Suffolk
Susan Everard, 25, Female Servant, b. Suffolk
Ann Pausey, 15, Female Servant, b. Suffolk

Samuel Debenham is listed in Pigot's 1830, 1839 & 1840 Directory for Bury St. Edmunds, as Bakers, Confectioners and Pastry Cooks. This Samuel died in 1844, as husband of Lucy Lingley. They had two sons, William and Samuel. Lucy died in B.St.E on 18 Jan 1820. His full name was Samuel Fearon Debenham, and may have had a brother Henry.

The will of Samuel Fearon mentions he leaves his wordly goods to his wife Lucy and to his two sons William and Samuel.

Pigot's directory list Samuel Fearon as a baker and confectioner, it later became Samuel F. and son, bakers and confectioners. This was his son Samuel's occupation before he became involved in photography.

Samuel & Martha had a son, Samuel, who was born in 1796, but both mother and son died the same year. Samuel then married Lucy Lingley in 1798 and they had two daughters & two sons.

Samuel Fearon died at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, in 1844, aged 68. His will was made in 1834, when Lucy was still alive.

NOTES from Tracey Moore (nee Debenham)
Samuel was born with a twin brother, William, baptized and died same year. At Samuel's first wedding, one of the witnesses was Lucy Lingley, who later became his second wife Another witness at the first wedding was Thomas Seaden

It had first been thought that Samuel's parents were Samuel Debenham & Sarah Vale, who married 2 Jul 1776, at All Saints, Sudbury, Suffolk. HOWEVER, we now know that his parents were John Debenham & Lydia Fearon. We currently have no information about John, but he was probably a distant cousin of the founder of Debenhams PLC.

The Samuel who married Sarah Vale was certainly related. His father was Thomas Debenham (1728-1778) of Alpheton, Suffolk who married Mary Makin.

Thomas was the grandfather of William Debenham (1794-1863), who founded Debenhams PLC (with Thomas Clark) in 1813. Their business transactions took place at 44 Wigmore St., London. It was called Clark and Debenham on one side of the street and Debenham and Clark on the other. Thomas Clark retired in 1837.

In 1851 the firm became Debenham son and Freebody, the son being William Debenham, eldest son of principal, and Mr Freebody being his brother-in-law (William married Caroline Freebody). After the principal’s death in 1863 the title of the firm became Debenham and Freebody.

In 1905, the business was incorporated and Debenhams first department store was opened. In 1928, Debenhams was listed on the London Stock Exchange where it traded as an independent company and continued to expand. In 1985, when it was acquired by the Burton Group, Debenhams had a portfolio of 65 department stores in key locations across the United Kingdom. In the late 1980s and early '90s Debenhams management began to reposition the business, introducing exclusive ranges of own brand merchandise across key product areas. In January 1998, Debenhams demerged from the Burton Group and became, once again, an independently listed company on the London Stock Exchange, now Debenhams plc.
