NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Walter Edwin Ashley Debenham

The photo was taken in 1950, and shows Walter with his three surviving brothers. From left to right, the brothers are Henry Temple Debenham, John Worley Debenham, Robert Wayland Debenham and Walter Edwin Ashley Debenham. It was taken when Walter paid a visit to England. He had emigrated to America some years before. Their oldest brother, Arthur, had died 6 years earlier.

The back of the photo has the name "John W. Debenham", Photographer, 182 Roundwood Road, Willesden, London, but the photo was either taken by someone else, or with a self timer. It is believed to be in the garden of Robert's home, "Mackaralls" (possibly Mackerells), in Kindford (or Kirdford), Sussex. Kindford does not appear to exist, but there is a "Mackerell's Common" at the north of Kirdford village, in Sussex.

With thanks to Tim Russell Gray (for photo) and Michael Debenham www.debenham.org.uk (for details).

NOTE: It is probably just a coincidence, but Ernest Ward Lowry (Arctic Explorer) was living next door at No. 39. Born c.1871 Limerick, Ireland. Professor Frank Debenham (b.1883, Australia) was a member of Captain Scott's last expedition to the South Pole (1910-1912). Frank's ancestors also came from Suffolk, but a link has not yet been found. See Debenham.org.uk for further details.

Louis Lachenal

Information from Wes Williams - archivist for the Inernational Concertina Association. www.concertina.org

Louis first arrived in Britain at the Port of London on 29 Dec 1829. He went to Switzerland in 1847, and returned back in England on 10th November accompanied by his wife, so its probable that they married either in his home town of Geneva, or her home town of Ferny Voltaire, in France. Louis was a clever engineer, holding at least two patents. He became involved with Sir Charles Wheatstone, the physicist and inventor of the concertina, and converted the hand made production of concertinas to machine made during the mid to late 1840s. He continued to make concertinas for Wheatstone until around 1858, when the patent expired, and then went into business as a concertina maker himself. He died, unfortunately young, in December 1861. His widow Jeanne continued to run the firm, using the name Elizabeth Lachenal until about 1873, when she retired and the firm was sold to a co-operative of its workers. This is only a brief summary. For a far greater account of Louis' life & career, please see the following website: http://www.concertina.com/chambers/lachenal-part1/

After her husband Louis' death, in December 1861, Jeanne continued to run his concertina production business, using the name Elizabeth Lachenal, until about 1873, when she retired and the firm was sold to a co-operative of its workers.
