NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

William Bridgens

TIMELINE:
1776 ..... Married Martha Shrubs in Portsmouth, Hampshire

William's roots are still a mystery at present. Hopefully, we will learn more once his and Martha's death have been discovered. We should then, at least, know when he was born.

Assuming he was aged 20 - 30 when he married, this would put his birth between 1746 - 1756, but his birthplace could be anywhere. Some believe he was born in or near Bridgnorth, Shropshire, and was a close relative of William Bridgen, the Lord Mayor of London 1763-64 (see below).

However, I believe it is most likely that he was born in one of the villages near Alton in Hampshire. The nucleus of the Bridgen surname appears to centre around the counties of West Midlands; Leicestershire, Worcestershire, Shropshire & Staffordshire. The IGI shows many records of Bridgen's in these counties, starting with the birth of Margery Brigen in Long Whatton, Leicestershire c.1542. There was a marriage of Alice Brigen in Ringwood, Hampshire, in 1564, but the next entry for Hampshire is almost 150 years later, when Joseph Bridgen was christened in St Mary Bourne, Hampshire, son of Thomas & Sarah. This is only 20 miles North of Alton. Perhaps Joseph's ancestors had slowly drifted South over the previous 150 years.

It seems likely that two of Joseph's descendants, Edward & Joseph, settled in Alton and married their spouses in 1777 & 1786. It is possible that "our" William was a brother of Edward & Joseph, and decided to travel further South to Portsmouth (about 25 miles), possibly with another brother, Thomas, who married Mary Knight in 1785 at Portsmouth.

The names of the children of Edward & Joseph (of Alton), are almost a replica of William's descendants. However, most of the parishes surrounding Alton & St Mary Bourne have not been transcribed by the Latter Day Saints, so much research is required at Winchester Record Office. Other members of this line moved to Southampton, so creating a large triangle of parishes to investigate.

Other possible birth places for William include Sussex & Oxfordshire. Some Bridgen's from Sussex are found in Portsmouth (and Southampton) in early Census returns.

It is also possible that William and Martha came to Portsmouth from Oxfordshire and may have returned there after Charles' birth in 1796. Their first surviving child, James, married his wife, Ann, there and they had their first child, Harriett, there. Harriett's husband was also born in Woodstock, Oxfordshire.

William may have had a brother Thomas:
Thomas BRIDGEN
Spouse: Mary KNIGHT
Marriage: 3 Feb 1785
Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England

NOTE from John Bridgen (RIN: 2584)
A William Bridgen was Lord Mayor of London 1763-64, married three times but left no legitimate issue.(His marriages appear to have been determined with an eye to worldly considerations, the women being advanced in life at the time of marriage.)

He died on October 19th 1779, and was buried on 27th September 1779 under a pew in the south aisle of St Andrew's Church, Enfield, Middlesex near the Middlemore family of Forty Hill. The initial nucleus of his family was in Bridgnorth, Shropshire.

It has to be conjectured that one or more Bridgens moved south to the Portsmouth area during the Napoleonic wars when the economy in those parts burgeoned with ship-building and their supply and victualling.

MESSAGE from Ancestry.com by: Constance (McBryde) Meeks

"BRIDGEN is the Gaelic name for McBryde/or MacBryde; and they are generally called in their native country, MacIlbridgen."

"One Ilbridgen king landed at Morven in Argyle, with a large army he had collected, and took up lodging in a cave which is called by his name "

"The antiquarians of Argyle maintain that this was the most renowned name amoungst the Caledonians, some will have it that they are descendants of Bridius, the first British king, but be that as it may, it is certain that the Bridgens were `Kings of the Western Isles of Scotland,' ages before the Roman Invasion."

"Most of the principal clans now in Scotland are sprung from the Bridgens, particularly the McDonalds, so called from Donald MacIlbridgen, who had sons, and is now called Clan Donnel, which signifies sons of Donald."

"The MacDonalds were Kings of Scotland, and Lords of the Isles." "McBryde/McBride, Angus Origin>sept of McDonald Clan." "the Mac Dougals, the Brodies>Bryde, a sept of Brodie, MacAlisters sprung from the Bridgens."
