NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

After a faithful service of twenty-three years in this field, he returned to England and served on several important circuits. He was a man of wide culture, and the author of several authoritative works on Buddhism in Ceylon and on Pali literature, viz.: The British Government and the Idolatry of Ceylon (London, 1841); Eastern Monachism: an Account of the Origin, Laws, Discipline, Sacred Writings . . . and Present Circumstances of the Order of Mendicants, founded by Gdtama Buddha (1850); A Manual of Buddhism in its Modern Development, translated from Singhalese MSS. Robert also wrote a biography of William Grimshaw (1708 - 1763), the Methodist preacher and incumbent of Haworth. Robert's sister, Maragaret, married another William Grimshaw, a wool sorter born 1800 near York, Yorkshire. However, Robert does not mention any relationship in his book, and no connection has been found to date. Further details can be found at: http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data1/dg/methodist/bio/biog.html

The Reading of Obituaries
The Rev. Spence Hardy was for many years a missionary in Ceylon. He was a very superior Eastern scholar, and his researches into Budhism are well known far beyond his own denomination.

NOTE: The same article gives a longer obituary to Rev. John Scott, who could be the father of Robert's son-in-law, also named Rev. John Scott. The former was born at Copmanthorpe, near York, in 1792. He died in Jan 1868 at Blackheath. He was in service for the ministry for 56 years, and for more than 30 years was an officer of the Foreign Missionary Society.
