NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Charlotte (Lottie) Bridgen (See Notes)

NOTE: This is person is mentioned in John Bridgen's notes as a child of Charles & Amelia, but no record exists. It is more likely that she was Charlotte Hoskings, who married Charles Eustace Bridgen

Notes from John Bridgen:
Evidently Lottie and Carry (Caroline Elizabeth) had quarrelled and that meant the end of all family contacts, said my mother, with the Bridgens. According to her Carry's wealth meant that her word was decisive in such matters. I have no relevant dates or information on marriages and children for her.

George Jones Foster

It is certain that George married Caroline Bridgen, as her name was Foster when she married Ernest Broadbent. It is most likely that he was George Jones Foster born in the district of Stourbridge, Worcestershire.

The 1871 Census shows a George Foster, of the correct age and birthplace, as step-son of magistrate John Russell Cookes. John married Ellen Barker Foster on 4 Dec 1860, so this does appear to be correct. John was widowed by 1871, so Ellen must have died between 1860 - 1871.

John, Ellen or George have not been found on the 1861 Census.

Bookplates of John Russell Cookes and his daughter, Ellen M.H. Cookes, are found in a book, "Charles O'Malley, the Irish Dragoon", a fictional account of an Irishman's experience in the Peninsular War (1807-1814), by Charles Lever.

Caroline Elizabeth Bridgen

TIMELINE:
1856 - Living at St. Thomas Street, Portsea, Hampshire (Christening)
1861 - Living at 24 Yorke Street, Portsea, Hampshire
1879 - Married George Jones Foster at London (March qtr)
1879 - George died at London (March qtr)
1879 - Married Thomas Ernest Broadbent at Portsmouth, Hampshire (25 October 1879)
1911 - district of Steyning, West Sussex
1913 - Married Milbourn Silvester at Westminster, London (5 November 1913)
1940 - Died at Brighton, West Sussex

Caroline married George Jones Foster, who died in the same quarter, aged 27. She then married Thomas Ernest Boyd Broadbent later that year. He was a brother of Frederick Holdsworth Broadbent who married Caroline's sister, Elizabeth.

Notes from John Bridgen (Great nephew of Caroline), suggest that Caroline married a Paul Ralli. His detailed information about Paul suggests that there must have been some connection, so it is likely that she had a relationship with him some time after her marriage to Thomas broke down. It's not known how long the second marriage lasted, but Thomas was a witness at his brother, Frederick's, marriage to Caroline's sister, Elizabeth, 3 years later. He may have introduced the couple, and it seems possible that the marriage was still OK at the time.

Caroline's 3rd marriage, to Milbourne Silvester, was 33 years later, so any relationship with Paul Ralli could have occured at any time during this period. Thomas appears to have been living on his own in 1891 & 1901. He died in 1902.

Caroline had at least one daughter, May, who died as a child in a boarding home. The father is uncertain, but could have been George or Thomas.

She left £19,000 in her will, but most went to 3 charities. She also set up a trust from which the following annuities were paid: £104 to her sister (Elizabeth?), during her life; an annuity of £104 to her brother during his life and then to his wife, should she survive him; and an annuity of £52 to her husband Milbourn. Unsatisfied with his small inheritance, he took out a summons and was awarded an extra £3 a week. A full account can be found in Milbourn's notes, along with further recollections of Carrie from her great nephew, John Bridgen.

NOTES from John Bridgen: (Great nephew)
Caroline Elizabeth Bridgen - born (christened) 8.06.1856 Portsea 2b 391 Married - Paul Ralli. (This is now proven to be incorrect)
Paul Ralli was of Ralli Bros, wealthy Greek merchant family with large interests in India; lived with him for a while on a ranch in the USA, subsequently in Wilton Street, London W. Paul Ralli died in 1883 (also incorrect) or later. It was from Paul Ralli that Caroline acquired the greater part of her wealth. Harold Bridgen said; on her death the principal was returned to the Greek company.
Harold was at one time buying their calicoes. Caroline Elizabeth's daughter May (said to have been very beautiful) was born after the death of Paul Ralli The second marriage to Broadbent was of very short duration indeed. Harold’s belief was that both Broadbents were army officers. The Silvester that Caroline married in 1913 was born in 1871.

It is possible that some of the above information refers to George Jones Foster. Perhaps the daughter (May) was born after George died in 1879.

Notes from Tim Gray: (Great nephew)
When Ethel Stier (Caroline's niece) developed Cancer, she was taken in by Caroline who was living in Streatham Hill, also three husbands later, and now Mrs Sylvester. They were with their Aunt Carrie for about two years before Ethel died.

Notes from Janet Tyson: (gg niece)
It was 'handed down' that Caroline had a son and a daughter, both of whom entered the theatre. The son worked on the technical, behind-the-scenes side, while the daughter, Christine, acted.
It was thought that Christine took the stage name Christine Barry, and later married Gordon Harker. Janet has found reference to their marriage, and examples of their work in films. She also has a vague recollection that Christine Barry's maiden name may have been Underwood.

However, there could be some confusion here with Caroline's sister, Laura, who married Horatio Nelson Barry in 1889. They had a son named Nelson, born about 1890 in Putney, London.

From about 1820 to 1840 the economic prosperity of Dacca and Narayanganj declined largely as a result of the competition of the Lancashire cotton industry and the fortunes of the Greek community there declined with them. In the last quarter of the 19th century the London-based Greek firm of Ralli Brothers constructed a memorial at Ramna in Dhaka to the memory of these early merchants. This Memorial contains ten gravestones of Greek merchants, some of their wives and one Greek priest who died between 1800 and 1860 and was built in the style of a classical Greek temple. It has been moved subsequently from its original site to one near the Teacher-Student Centre of Dhaka University. Most of the inscriptions are in classical Greek but some are in English.

Interview with Peter Calvocoressi
A few years before that terrible event, some of my mother's family set up in London a branch of Ralli Brothers, which became headquarters for the spectacularly successful merchant firm that started in Chios and the Black Sea area during the eighteenth century and continued its trading worldwide until after World War II. My mother was a Ralli and my father worked for Ralli Brothers in Karachi, where I was born. When I was three months old, my family moved to England, which has been my home now for almost eighty years.

The story of Cargill Cotton can be traced back to 1818 when John and Eustace Ralli established a partnership in London trading in a variety of commodities from cotton and silk to metals. Over the next thirty years the brothers' business interests began to focus predominantly on cotton from the East Indies and in 1851 Ralli Brothers was incorporated, with offices in the United Kingdom, Calcutta and Bombay.

During the early history of cotton trading the port of Liverpool soon emerged as the principle trading centre and in 1865 Smith, Coney and Barrat was founded in the city where it was perfectly placed to service the demand of the burgeoning Lancashire spinning industry.

Ralli Brothers and Smith, Coney and Barrat continued to trade successfully and by the middle of the twentieth century they had grown to became two of the United Kingdom's leading cotton merchants. In 1962 the two companies agreed a merger and Ralli Brothers and Coney was formed.

ENGINEER
Hampshire - Lieut. Thomas Ernest Boyd Broadbent resigns his commission.

The Times - 22 Aug 1877 - (Possibly Thomas)
The adjourned August Sessions for crinminal business were held today, at Clerkenwvell, before Mr. P. E. Edlin, QC., Assistant-Judge; Mdr. Serjeant Cox, Chairman of the Second Court; Captain Morley, Mr. J. D. Fletcher, Sir James Tyler, Mr. Price, Sir John Heron Maxwell, Mr. Hogarth, Mlr. Bashford, and Mr. lalett, Justices.

Stephen Randall Naidauld, 25, was charged with having stolen a cat's-eye diamond ring, of the value of £25, the property of Ernest Boyd Broadbent, residing at 61,Thistle- grove, Kensington. Mr. Abrams prosecuted, and Mr. Montagu Williams defended. Mrs. Broadbent, while travelling in a cab on the 12th of July to Covent-garden, took off her ring, and placed, it as she thought, in her pocket, but on her arrival home in the evening she missed it. She informed the cab-driver of her loss, and he, having searched the cab without success, told the prisoner, whose duty it was to wash the cab out, that a ring had been lost, and that if he found it he would know to whom it belonged.

On the 11th inst. the prisoner attempted to pawn the ring at a pawnbroker's at Fulham, asking an advance of 25s. upon it. The pawnbroker detained the prisoner, when he accounted for the possession of the ring by stating that he had found it in a gutter. The jury, after deliberating for some time, returned a verdict of Guilty, accompanied by a strong recommendation to mercy, on account of the prisoner's previous good character, which had been established by a large number of respectable witnesses. The prisoner's employer expressed his willingness to take the prisoner back at once into his service, and the Assistant- Judge allowed the prisoner to go out on finding sureties to come up for judgment when called upon.

TIMELINE:

Unsatisfied with his small inheritance, he took out a summons and was awarded an extra £3 a week. A full account can be found in Milbourn's notes, along with further recollections of Carrie from her great nephew, John Bridgen.

MILBOURNE SYLVESTER, 39

Notes from John Bridgen:
I caused some consternation on one occasion at Streatham Hill where prior to WW2 Caroline lived with Dinky, the name she used for Milbourne Sylvester, husband no.3 who was an excellent cook and had been in the hotel trade. I pointed to the photo of a very sweet looking girl and asked who she was and was promptly ushered out of the room.
Apparently Carry had had a child between husbands one and two who died while away in boarding school at perhaps seven years of age. Dinky by the way was always very kind with the great nephews, very ready to supply sugar sandwiches and repair-solder my broken leaden soldiers. Carry used Dinky quite blatantly as a domestic servant, very necessary during those lengthy periods when she took to her bed after alcoholic excess. On the other hand I have recollections of her as a very jolly person who would dance around with her great nephews and would on occasion take me up by privately hired car with chauffeur to have ice-cream on the roof of Harrods. My mother's recollections were of a different nature you may well imagine. She recalled how she and Cissie (Ruby May), were reduced to vying with each other in excessive politeness as each sought to avoid sitting on the commode that Carrie with a fiandish glee was pressing them to sit on as "the most comfortable seat in the room", when she, Carrie, would have taken to her bed for a spell after a bout of excessive alcohol. She died in February 1940.

Delving into the microfilm in the Bodleian I discovered the following article in the News Chronicle of 1st November 1940. Headline. "He did the housework for his rich wife". A husband who gave up his job to do the housework for his wealthy wife and was left £1 a week in her will, was granted an increase in the Chancery Division yesterday. He asked for £5 a week. The husband, Mr Milbourne Silvester of Prebend Gardens, Stratford Brook, W., formerly manager of licensed premises, was 42 (said counsel) when the marriage took place nearly 27 years ago. He and his wife lived in Langdale Gardens, Hove, until her death last February. Mrs Silvester had no servant. The husband did all the housework and attended her during her several illnesses, the wife refusing to have a nurse. In doing so he was prevented from earning his own living and making provision for his old age. Next headline: "Left £19,000" Mrs Silvester left about £19,000. She gave certain legacies, and the residue to the National Lifeboat Institution, Dr Barnardo's Homes and the Church Army. There was no explanation why she gave her husband £1 a week only. It was a great surprise to him as they were on the best of terms. Mr Justice Powell said it was an exceptional case. He directed that Mr Silvester should have an additional £3 a week, free from duty.

Further details of above case.

Legal Notes Re Sylvester

The Inheritance (Family Provision) Act 1938S. 1 (2) provides that when a deceased person has left a will but has not by such will made proper provision for any dependant as defined by the Act the Court may make an order for payment of a reasonable provision for the maintenance of such dependant by way of periodical payments from the income of the estate.HELD that although the husband of a deceased woman is a dependant as defined by the Act the Court presumes that prima facie a husband is capable of maintaining himself and it is only in exceptional circum-stances that the Court will make an order under the Act in his favour. This was a summons taken out by Milbourne Sylvester the husband of Caroline Elizabeth Sylvester asking that the Court under the Inheritance (Family Provision) Act 1938 should make some proper provision for him for his maintenance during his widower-hood on the ground that no such proper provision had been provided by the will of his wife.

The spouses were married on 5 November 1913. At that timet he plaintiff who was 42 years of age was the manager of licensed premises. Apart from his salary he had no means. His wife had some means and after the marriage he gave up his business as manager and the whole of the spouses' living expenses were defrayed until her death on 24 February 1940 out of the wife's income. There were no children of the marriage. By her will the wife after the bequest of certain legacies gave the whole residue of her estate upon the usual trust to sell and convert and the whole of the proceeds upon trust to pay an annuity of £104 to her sister, during her life, an annuity of £104 to her brother during his life and if he should die leaving his wife surviving him to her during her life, and an annuity of £52 to the plaintiff during his life and she left the residue to be divided among three charities absolutely. The estate was amply sufficient to provide an increased annuity to the plaintiff without abating the other annuities. The learned judge said that he did not think that in the ordinary way applications by husbands for the sort of assistance which the Act enabled the Court to give were applications which ought readily to be entertained. Primafacie the husband should be able to maintain himself and ought not to ask the Court to give him out of his wife's estate more than she had thought fit to provide for him.

There were however exceptional cases in which such an application might be justified and he thought that this was one of these. The evidence showed that the plaintiff up to the time of his marriage was earning an income upon which he was able to maintain himself. He then gave up his occupation and his earnings in order to devote himself to his wife. The wife seemed to have kept no servants and the husband did all the work of the house and when his wife was ill which happened on more than one occasion he had to nurse her and look after her as she was not willing to engage the services of a nurse. In that way he was prevented from earning his own living or from making such provision for his old age as he might otherwise have done.

Now at the age of 69 his chances of earning a living were very much prejudiced if not almost destroyed by the circumstances of his married life. In these circumstances he, the learned judge, thought that the provision of £1 a week was inadequate and that his wife had not made a proper provision for him.

On the whole he came to the conclusion that a reasonable provision would be £4 a week and he would make an order directing that out of the income of the estate there should be paid to him during his widowerhood an additional £3 Per week.

Notes from John Bridgen:
Charles Eustace, I have a note that he was at one time a Writer in the Royal Navy, serving in the channel between Madagascar and Mozambique in the suppression of the slave trade. I have no note of the first wife but the younger children of this marriage, Frank, Wilfred and Aileen, were brought up by the second wife, Vera, whom I recall as yet another protegee of Carry. There were also older children who were able to fend for themselves but of their names I have no trace.

Charlotte Maria Hoskings

NOTE: This is person is mentioned in John Bridgen's notes as a child of Charles & Amelia, but no record exists. It is more likely that she was Charlotte Hoskings, who married Charles Eustace Bridgen

Notes from John Bridgen:
Evidently Lottie and Carry (Caroline Elizabeth) had quarrelled and that meant the end of all family contacts, said my mother, with the Bridgens. According to her Carry's wealth meant that her word was decisive in such matters. I have no relevant dates or information on marriages and children for her.

George Colwell

ABODES:
1822 ..... Southwick. (Christening)

Info from Olga Housden:
George Colwell arrived in Adelaide, South Australia on the 11 May 1849. His ship "Stebonheath" left Plymouth on the 31st. January 1849.

The information on George's marriage and children was supplied by Constance Betty Hawken (nee GANT), who has since died in 2006.

She gave George's birth as: 18 Mar 1816, Southwick, W-Sussex, Eng and parents as John and Elizabeth. The County is wrong and the date is 6 years previous but I have not found him on any Census or other UK records, so I believe this must be him.

Constance also supplied the information on George's brother, Henry, who emigrated to Australia about 1852. Their niece, Amelia Colwell, (my Great Aunt) also appears to have emigrated to Australia with her husband, George Smith. This is under investigation.
