NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

ABODES:
1881 ..... West Street, Southwick, Hampshire.
1906 ..... Ghain Tuffieha, Malta
1909 ..... Haslar Hospital, Gosport, Hampshire
1909 ..... Deal, Kent

The photo of William was probably taken in Malta. It was dated 17 Dec 1906 - Rifle Range, Ghain Tuffieha, Malta, and was addressed to Mr Philip Colwell, Southwick, Nr Fareham, Hants. It reads:
My Dear Uncle & Aunt
A few lines trusting they will find you both in good health as it leaves me at present and wishing you a Merry Xmas and good luck for the coming year. Am looking forward to the time when I shall see you all again. I remain your affectionate nephew "Bill". Remember me to all my cousins and old chums.

A letter from William's uncle Philip in July 1909 tells that William had served almost 21 years in the Royal Marines, but had to leave a few months before he was due a pension for life, as he had become ill with cancer of the throat. He had his tongue cut out and two further operations, but it was too late to save him. His uncle, Philip Colwell, visited him every other Sunday at Haslar Hospital in Gosport, Hampshire, but William spent the end of his life at his wife's home in Deal, Kent.

His Marine comrades travelled from Portsmouth and Gosport to attend his funeral at Deal, and his death was reported in a local paper at Deal. A transcript can be read here.

NOTES:
Could not sign his name in 1852.
Father named as John (Deceased) on marriage certificate in 1852.

Henry is thought to be the illegitimate son of Charlotte Colwell, christened at Southwick, Hampshire 13 Feb 1824 (father not named). She was born between 1795 - 1800 and had another illegitimate son earlier, in 1821, called John, whose father was John Hoar, a bailiff from Furzeley Corner, nr Denmead.

Henry's date of birth is from a family bible.

John Hoar? (see notes)

NOTE:
It is known that John Hoar, a bailiff from Furzeley Corner, nr Denmead, had an illegitimate son named John Colwell, born 1821, whose mother was Charlotte Colwell. This could be the John living with Margaret in Anmore, less than a mile from Furzeley Corner, on the 1851 census.

HOWEVER: The John and Margaret living in Anmore 1851 could be John Colwell and Margaret Pratt, who married at St. Faith's, Havant, 25 Oct 1848. This John's age was given as Full, he could not sign his name and occupation was labourer. His father was Francis Colwell, also a labourer.

It is also thought that John and Charlotte were the parents of Henry Colwell, born about 1823 in East Meon or Soberton (from Censuses). Henry's father is named as John (Deceased) on his marriage certificate in 1852. This could be John Hoar although no evidence has been found to prove this fact.

Charlotte Colwell

NOTE:
According to censuses, Charlotte was born 1802-1804 at Hambledon, Hampshire. It is not known who her parents were but one possibility is that she was an illegitimate daughter of John Colwell, born 1777 Hambledon, who married Elizabeth Cross at Southwick in 1808 and raised the first Colwell family in that village.

Charlotte could have been raised by John's parents, who married at Meonstoke, and then moved to Southwick, after they died, to be supported by her father John?

It seems more likely that Colwell was her mother's surname, and the mother was one of John's unmarried first cousins. She may have moved away from the area for the birth.

It is known that she had an illegitimate son named John Colwell, born 1821, whose father was John Hoar, a bailiff from Furzeley Corner, nr Denmead. This could be the John living with Margaret in Anmore, less than a mile from Furzeley Corner, on the 1851 census. However the John and Margaret living in Anmore 1851 could be John Colwell and Margaret Pratt, who married at St. Faith's, Havant, 25 Oct 1848. This John's age was given as Full, he could not sign his name and occupation was labourer. His father was Francis Colwell, also a labourer.

Charlotte had a second illegitimate son, Henry, who was baptised at Southwick 13 Feb 1824. He was born at East Meon or Soberton (from Censuses). Henry's father is named as John (Deceased) on his marriage certificate in 1852. This could be John Hoar although no evidence has been found to prove this fact.

It is interesting to note that, in 1851, Charlotte was living 2 buildings away from Francis Colwell (c.1809, Catherington) and his wife, Harriett Eames. Could she be an illegitimate sister of his? His parents were Francis Colwell & Elizabeth Pratt.

Death: Jun 1891 - Shears Charlotte, aged 96 Droxford 2c 91
Details: (Courtesy of Charles Wrench)
Charlotte died at Mead End, Denmead, Hambledon on 18th June 1891 aged 96. The person reporting death was her grand-daughter, described as L. Gilham. (Probably Elizabeth)
NOTE: This puts her date of birth back to about 1795. She must have lied to William about her age. The 1891 census shows her living in Mead End with her daughter Caroline and Caroline's family, including Elizabeth. Charlotte's birthplace is given as Lambeth, Middlesex. Is this where she was really born? Perhaps her mother had gone there to escape the gossip of her illegitimate pregnancy.
