NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

John Hardy MP

Of Dunstan Hall, Staffordshire; Judge of the duchy of Lancaster of Pontefract

John was a Member of Parliament for Bradford, from 1832 to 1837 and 1841 to 1847.

He was the main owner of Low Moor ironworks (See below).

He married Isabel, daughter of Richard Gathorne. Their elder son John was created a Baronet in 1876 and their third son Gathorne became a prominent Conservative politician and was created Earl of Cranbrook in 1892.

The Low Moor Iron Company was formed in 1789 at North Bierley, near Bowling, Yorkshire, on the Rookes Hall, previously owned by Edward Leedes. After Edward's bankruptcy and suicide, the estate was purchased for £33,200 by Rev. Joseph Dawson, Richard Hird & John Hardy, and a few smaller partners who soon sold out.

John Hardy was a Bradford solicitor, who served as estate steward to Walter Spencer-Stanhope. Here he developed his skills in entrepreneurial speculation, which he later used to form his own dynasty. (NOTE: A Walter Stanhope was living in Horsforth in 1643, and a John Stanhope, or Horsforth, was corresponding to a Mary Hardy, of Horsforth, in 1707.)

Dawson & Hardy's mineralogical and management skills increased the company's annual capital from £52,000 in 1793 to £250,000 in 1818. The company remained in the Dawson & Hardy families throughout the 19th century, and also the Hird's (by inheritance) and the Wicham's, who married into the Hird family.

The church of St Mary, at Dunstall, has a large window dedicated to John and his wife, Isobel, at the west end of the nave. He funded the building of the church when he moved into Dunstall Hall. The previous occupants were the Arkwright family, who paid £12,000 to commence the building. Memorials are also in the church for John's son, John & wife Laura, and grandson Reginald and his wife Lucy, niece of William Gladstone PM.
