NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

James Piper

Info from John W. Piper: (Descendant)
John has a photo of James on which is written "James Piper 1864 aged 69" giving his DOB 1794/5.

A "James Piper", son of James and Alice, was baptised 20 Jul 1794 at Marnhull, a few miles North of Milton Abbey. John wondered if James Snr. may have been employed by Lord Milton, who, at that time was in the process of demolishing the village of Milton and replacing it with Milton Abbas and reconstructing the Abbey and Abbey Church. Perhaps the christening was at Marnhull for practical reasons, or was it the family home of Alice?

James owned a 2.5 acre nursery at Church Crescent in Parkstone, Poole, Dorset.

Click here to see a map of plots owned by James.
He owned plots 261, 262, 263 and 282 (part) which was sold off for housing development in the 1950's. Also plots 231, 231a and 232 on the other side of the road which were included in the sale. It is believed that he also owned Charlton Villa (inherited by his son Edward), which is thought to be the house on the corner of Pipers Drive, plot 267. Also a very small plot in Parr St. plus other property elsewhere.

A list showing land owned and occupied by James Piper can be found here.

Ann (See Notes)

Probably Ann Bryant (Briant) previously married to Richard Prior. (See further down this page)

It would appear that James married at least two Anne's. The census data below shows his wife's birthplaces as Dorset (1841), Wiltshire (1851) & Hampshire (1861). It seems safe to assume that Anne Taylor is James' first wife, and is assumed to be the mother of all his children. They married a year before Eliza was born, and is probably the same Ann shown on the 1841 Census. However, the Ann shown in 1841 could be a daughter of Ann Gouldring, who is also in the household in 1841.

The Ann who died in 1852 would have been born about 1801. If she is the mother, and the same person shown on the 1841 & 51 Census, she would have been only about 15 or 16 at the birth of Eliza Ann.

It is possible that Ann Taylor was born in Dorset, about the same time as James, and died before 1851. James then married another Ann (of Calne, Wiltshire), who died in 1852, at Parkstone, aged 52. He then married a third Ann (of Havant, Hampshire), who died before 1871.

As all his children were born before 1837, the only way to prove the theory above is to find further burial and marriage records.

HOWEVER ... new information from John W. Piper suggests that Anne Taylor was born 26 Jun 1800 and baptised 1 May 1803 at Calne, Wiltshire, daughter of Thomas Taylor born c.1770 and Jane Wilcox born c.1774, who married 12 Oct 1795 at Calne. Thomas Taylor was probably not born in Calne.

This suggests that Ann Taylor was married at the age of 15. The two witnesses to the marriage at Wimborne Minster were local 17 year old girls. It therefore appears that Anne Taylor is also the same person shown on the 1841 & 51 census. If so, the 1841 birthplace is incorrect, or perhaps her parents died young and she was raised by relatives in Dorset. She may have then discovered that she was born in Calne after 1841.

In 1923 Alfred Ernest died of Tuberculosis while serving as a private in the Royal Auxiliary Service Corps. Dorothy Edna Fripp is on the Death certificate as informant. Living at 13 Church Lane by (written down as) D. E. Tickner. Now as far as I know she never changed her name. I think it was just to cut the red tape so to speak.
