NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

John Hibidage

John started life in humble surroundings but by the time of his death, in February 1880, he had accumulated properties to the value of £25,000. Only a few details of his life have been uncovered to date, although he must have been a prominent figure in the birth of Bournemouth. He is given a brief mention in a book by Charles H. Mate, titled "Bournemouth: 1810-1910".

By 1841 he had joint tenancy of some land adjoining Pool Hill, on the original "Bourne Property" that formed the nucleus of today's Bournemouth. The other tenants of this piece of land were; Messrs. George Berry and David Tuck. This land was part of the Gervis Estate owned by Sir George Tapps-Gervis, whose father, Sir George Ivison Tapps, Lord of the Manor of Christchurch, purchased 205 acres, including the East Cliff, in 1805. At this time the whole of Bournemouth consisted of 28 buildings, including 16 new holiday homes known as Westover Villas. The construction of these homes commenced in 1836, built by David Tuck, who had the monopoly of the work under Sir George until the arrival of John Hibidage. It is thought, but not yet confirmed, that John also had a hand in the construction of Westover Villas. Previous to this time, Bourne "mouth" had only a handful of buildings, the first being built for Captain Lewis Tregonwell in 1810. The land between Christchurch and Poole was baron heathland, inhabited by poachers and smugglers. A plank of wood was used to cross the Bourne Stream. An excellent website showing the growth of Bournemouth, with maps, paintings and historic details can be found here:

Research is pending to discover how many buildings, roads and other constructions were carried out by John, but, in 1848, John Hibidage and David Tuck commenced building two large villas on the East Cliff for Rev. W. Timson and Dr. Mainwaring, Bournemouth's first resident doctor. John also built part of St Peter's church, where he and his wife are buried, although their graves were among many that were later cleared.

John also appears to have dedicated one of the windows in St. Peter's to a niece, but this is being investigated.

The 1851 census shows John as a Carpenter & Builder employing just 3 men, but his workforce had increased to 30 men and 4 boys by 1871. He was also listed as an undertaker in 1861.

At some period, he formed a partnership, concerning brickmaking, with Christopher Crabbe Creeke, an established architect and first Surveyor of the Bournemouth Commissioners. It is likely that John implemented at least a few of his designs. Christopher was made an executor of John's will and acted as plaintiff when the will was contested by Sarah Ann Butler, a niece of John's wife. The case was reported in detail in the Christchurch Times on 12 March 1881 and can be viewed here. A summary of the case follows.

Sarah Ann Butler was a daughter of John's sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hannah Wood and Thomas Butler. Thomas died when Sarah was still very young and she then moved in with John & Sarah Hibidage. After a while she took over the duties previously undertaken by John's stepdaughter, Angelina.

John made his first will in May 1873 leaving £200 to Sarah Ann Butler. He later made several codices to the will. Finally, in December 1879, leaving her 5 houses, including Linwood House, to the value of £7000.

Angelina (Sarah Hibidage's daughter by a previous marriage) was raised by John and treated as if she were his own daughter, until she left the family home to marry Thomas Lance in 1847. When Thomas died, towards the end of 1879, she moved back with John & Sarah. Very soon after this John became ill.

In January 1880, John appointed Christopher Crabb Creeke, and a Miss Elizabeth Banger (possible sister-in-law) to make a new will changing his gift to Sarah Ann Butler to just £1000, leaving the rest to his wife & stepdaughter.

In the court case, witnesses were called to check the signatures. Miss Banger and other witnesses told the court that Sarah, who also helped John with his book keeping, caused many disagreements between John and his wife. The jury decided that the latest will, made on 4th February 1880, was genuine.

John also left a large portion of his will, including Linwood House, to a niece, Caroline Houghton (nee Piper). Caroline was a daughter of Ann Kent Hibdige & Edward Piper. Caroline married Frederick Charles Houghton in 1872 at London. However, she died in 1892 and her husband died 7 years later. It is thought that the remainder of her inheritance was shared among her 8 children, but details have not yet been found.

Notes for Christopher Crabbe Creeke (1820-1886)
Christopher was the first Surveyor of the Bournemouth Commissioners and played a major role in the early development and planning of the town. He designed beautifully curved roads around the chines, which were lined with grand villas, some of which were built by John Hibidage. Several of these have now been pulled down for redevelopment and construction of the Nuffield Hospital.

He also designed many of the towns landmarks, including the Central Pleasure Gardens, the cemetery and chapel at Wimborne Road, two wings of the Royal Bath Hotel and the reconstructed Boscombe Manor. He also designed Poole cemetery.

In 1856 he was given the title of 'Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances' which he held until 1879.

A statue of Christopher with Bournemouth's founder, Captain Lewis Tregonwell, was erected in May 1999 near the entrance of the Bournemouth International Centre. Christopher is depicted sitting on a lavatory, portraying his role as the town's first sanitary engineer.

Another "Sarah Chafey BANGER", was christened at Moor Crichel , 18 Sep 1796, Daur of Ambrose & Martha. She probably married Francis Woodhatch at Bradford Abbas, Dorset on 24 Sep 1817. It is not known if she is related.

Unknown

It is possible that John Hibidage was the father of Angelina, but the news report (of a court case re. John's will) claims that she was not his natural daughter. See John's notes.

Sarah is reported here, to have had a sister, Elizabeth Hannah Wood, who married Thomas Butler at Southampton in 1844, but Elizabeth's father was named as Daniel Wood. An Elizabeth Hannah Wood is reported to be a sister of Sarah Chaffey Banger. See Elizabeth's notes.

Elizabeth is reported here, to be a sister of Sarah Chafey Banger, but the Elizabeth referred to appears to be Elizabeth Hannah Wood, who married Thomas Butler at Southampton in 1844. However, this Elizabeth's father was named as Daniel Wood. Thomas Butler died a few years after their daughter, Sarah Ann Butler was born. This young girl was then taken in by John & Sarah Hibidage. This girl also had a sister, Angelina Fanny Butler, who was adopted by Sarah Hibidage's daughter, Angelina, and given the surname of Lance.

This confusion needs to be resolved.

One theory: It is possible that Elizabeth's father, John Banger, died and her mother, Hannah, married Daniel Wood in 1816. See below:
HANNAH BANGER
Spouse: DANIEL WOOD
Marriage: 25 NOV 1816 Stoke Damerel, Devon
