NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Notes

Sir Leslie Stephen

Sir Leslie was an author and editor of books and magazines. His largest task was to edit the 22 volume "Dictionary of National Biography", which he started in 1882. He had previously been editor of "The Cornhill Magazine" for 11 years.

He was also a keen mountaineer and was the first to conquer the 4,000 meter Schreckhorn in Switzerland. He published a book on mountaineering, titled "The Playground of Europe", in 1871, in which he describes his Alpine climbs.

His other works covered philosophy; "History of English Thought in the Eighteenth Century" and "The English Utilitarians"; and a collection of tales in "The Twilight of the Gods".

However, his fame was probably overshadowed by his daughter Adeline, better known by her middle and married name - Virginia Woolf.

Edward Strachey Phillipps

A biography of Edward and his wife, Leora, can be obtained here: http://www.cagenweb.com/cpl/cplbiospg.htm

Naturalised in Tulare County, California, USA on 1 Jun 1902
See: http://www.cagenweb.com/cpl/tulare/tcnat3.htm

Family notes from Bonnie Runjavac: (great niece)
Edward was thought to have been raised in Canada. He returned to England to introduce his new wife to family members. On the way back, the ship's crew mutinied and Edward and his wife, Leora Campbell Phillipps, were left on an island off the coast of New Foundland. They were eventually rescued. Strachey had travelled all over the world and settled in the San Joaquin Valley to raise grapes. He was very interested in botany.

It was said that Strachey's grandmother was an Indian princess (actually half Indian, half Scottish). His family were quite wealthy and he must have inherited a trust fund, as he did not make money in farming and lived quite extravagantly for people in the area. He had one son, Ted Phillipps, who never married. He had a very dark complexion, as did Leora and her sisters. They were all prematurely gray and had beautiful white "cotton candy" hair.

Edward and Lee (Leora) lived in a beautiful old Victorian house, now demolished, where Bonnie spent much time in her youth.

A family tale existed that Lee and her three sisters were spoiled by their father "Huse" and that they were quite the "catches" in the area. Evidently, Strachey asked the oldest sister, Julia, (supposedly the prettiest) to marry him. She said "no" and threw the engagement ring in the fireplace. Lee came out and rescued the ring from the fireplace and said she would marry him.

An account of the mutiny can also be found herealthough it does not mention Edward & Leora. Another brief account can be found here.
