NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Rev. Philip Ward

Post Office Directory of Kent, 1855 - p.511 - Tenterden The living is a vicarage, value £450 per annum, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, and the Rev. Phillip Ward, M.A., is the incumbent. His lady is the celebrated Horatia, daughter of the immortal Nelson.
The church of St. Mildred is a large and handsome building, in the perpendicular style, with lofty square tower and pinnacles, and bus a fine peal of eight bells.

Philip became Vicar of St Mildred’s in August 1830 and was inducted by Rev. William Temple, Curate of Tenterden. He, and his daughter, Caroline, are commemorated on a plaque on the South wall of St. Mildred's. His sons, Edmund and Philip are also remembered in the church.

Horatia Nelson (Thompson)

Details of Horatia can be found at the Nelson Society website here

Horatia is acknowledged in Nelson's will as Horatia Nelson Thompson, his "adopted" daughter. He and Emma had claimed that her real parents were a Mr & Mrs Thompson. Her date of birth has been given as 3rd or 29th Jan 1801, and also 5th Feb 1801. She accepted that Admiral Nelson was her real father, but tried to prove that the late Lady Hamilton was not her biological mother.

After her husband's death, in 1859, she left Tenterden to live with her son, Nelson, and his wife at Pinner, Middlesex.

I have a copy of Lord Nelson's Will, printed in a bound 1805 volume of "The Lady's Magazine; or Entertaining Magazine for the Fair Sex". The Will was reproduced in the magazine as part of a series entitled "Biographical Anecdotes of Lord Nelson". A codicil, dated 6 Sept 1803, includes the following extract: "... I give and bequeath to miss Horatio Nelson Thompson (who was baptised on the 13th day of May last, in the parish of St. Mary-la-bonne, in the county of Middlesex, by Benjamin Laurence, curate, and John Willock, assistant clerk (and who I acknowledge as my adopted daughter), the sum of £4,000 sterling money of Great Britain, to be paid at the expiration of six months after my decease, or sooner if possible; and I leave my dearest friend Emma, lady Hamilton, sole guardian of the said Horatio Nelson Thompson, until she shall have arrived at the age of eighteen years, and the interest of the said £4,000 to be paid to lady Hamilton, for her education and maintenance. This request of guardianship I earnestly make of lady Hamilton, knowing that she will educate my adopted child in the paths of religion and virtue, and give her those accomplishments which so much adorn herself, and I hope make her a fit wife for my dear nephew, Horatio Nelson, who I wish her to marry, if he proves worthy in Lady Hamilton's estimation of such a treasure, as I am sure she will be....."
Jim Fuller

According to the book 'Beloved Emma - The Life of Emma, Lady Hamilton' by Flora FRASER: "... Horatia cherished the memory of Lord Nelson with obsessive zeal. She lived first with the MATCHAMs, then in 1817 went to live with the William BOLTONs in Burnham Market in Norfolk. Here she had a romantic meeting with a curate over a garden wall. Horatia and Philip WARD were married in 1822, had nine children, and lived a sedate and happy life in Norfolk." Philip WARD died in 1859. Horatia lived after her husband's death with her son Nelson, in Pinner on the outskirts of London. Another son, Horace, became a clergyman, by her wish. Horatia died in her eightieth year (c.1881). In 1970 Winifred GERIN write a book entitled "Horatia Nelson", which may contain more detail about her family. Mike LONGWORTH, Yateley, Hampshire, UK

"Could I have rewarded these services, I would not now call upon my country; but as that has not been in my power, I leave Emma Lady Hamilton therefore a legacy to my king and country, that they will give her an ample provision to maintain her rank in life. "I also leave to the beneficence of my country my adopted daughter, Horatio Nelson Thomson; and I desire she will use in future the name of Nelson only.
