NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Notes

John Skrine

John certainly died before July 1691, and most probably before 1682, when his son received a Grant of Arms.

Francis Fortescue Knottesford (nee Fortescue)

Oxford Alumni:
KNOTTESFORD, Francis Fortescue-, son of Francis Fortescue of Edmonton, Middlesex, arm. Queens College; matric. 16 Mar 1790, aged 17; B.A. 1793; M.A. 1798, of Alveston, Warwickshire. Assumed the additional name of Knottesford. Rector of Billesley, Warwickshire 1823 until his death 31 May 1859. See Foster's Peerage, B. Claremont.

Francis was bequeathed the manors of Alveston and Teddington by his cousin, John Knottesford, on the condition that he assume the name of Knottesford. However, the name did not pass down through generations, as his children were Christened with the name of Fortescue.

Francis Fortescue (Fortesque)

The Fortescue family has been traced back to Sir Richard LE FORT of Normandy, a contemporary of William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy. Sir Richard was a very strong Norman knight and a cupbearer to William when he landed in England in 1066. The legend is that, with his shield, he saved the Duke from blows in battle. He was thenceforward known as Richard le Fort-Escu or Strong Shield. Sir Richard Fortescu returned to Normandy, leaving his son, Sir Adam, who also fought at Hastings in England to settle in South Devon.
For details of Francis' ancestry, see: http://www.fortescue.org/d604.htm#P615
