NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Notes

Sarah Smith

This person appears to be Sarah Smith, mentioned in the will of John Downing in 1623, as one of several Smith grandchildren. She appears to have married a Mr. Cotton (see possible husbands below), who died before 1675. Her will (dated 1675) mentions some of the people in John's will, and many of the people in the will of Richard Downing, who refers to her as his cousin. She seems to imply that Richard was her uncle.

Sarah's will found at: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=157-ddt_1-2&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18#-1

Genealogical notes concerning Cotton, Annesley, Hanbury, Prideaux and Downing families in the 17th-19th cents. All these families were inter-related and, through the Cottons, related to the Tyndales, who were also related to the Skrine family of Bathford.

John Hauslye (Handley?)

Possible marriage: LDS
SIBBILA SMITH
Spouse: JOHN HANDLEY
Marriage: 16 NOV 1648 Saint Bartholomew The Less, London

The transcript of Sarah's will may have mistaken Handley for Hausley.

Katherine Cotton

Katherine's mother is mentioned in the will of John Downing, dated May 1623, as Sarah Smith, his unmarried granddaughter.

Sarah's will is dated 1675, and Katherine is her executrix, named as Katherine Mantle. She was probably born after 1624 and married between 1644 - 1675.

The will also mentions children Mary, Susannah, Katherine, Robert and Elizabeth, but I am uncertain if these ar children of Sarah of Katherine. They appear to be Katherine's children, as Katherine is mentioned as mother and child. See transcript in Sarah's notes.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Samuel Coleridge was one of England's best known poets of the 19th century. He was also a literary critic and philosopher. He was a good friend of poets William Wordsworth and Robert Southey, and married the sister of Southey's wife, six weeks before Southey married.

The marriage was doomed from the start, and they spent little time together. Coleridge spent several years in Europe, and then settled in the Lake District for a while, where he, Southey and Wordsworth were the leading members of the "Lake Poets". These three were also among the founders of the English Romantic Movement.

While there, his marriage to Sarah had deteriated to an extent that he detested his wife, and they eventually separated in 1808. He had, by then, become addicted to opium, which he used to treat his bouts of depression and anxiety.

He then spent more time in Europe, before moving back to London, where he spent the last 18 years of his life living with the family of his physician, James Gilman.

For a full list of his works, and detailed biographies, see following websites:

Sarah Fricker

Sarah and her sister, Edith, married two of England's best known poets of the 19th century. Coleridge and Southey were good friends and married the two sisters six weeks apart. Coleridge married first, but had doubts even before the marriage. He spent little time with her and they eventually separated.

The two families lived together at Greta Hall, Keswick, in the English Lake District. It was originally two separate buildings, but Southey combined them when Coleridge separated from his wife.

Another sister, Mary Fricker, married Robert Lovell, a friend of the poets and son of a wealthy quaker businessman from Bristol. Details of the sisters and their families are found in the book, "A passionate sisterhood", by Kathleen Jones.

"Charles" William Henry Bowles

NOTE: Named William Henry Bowles at birth (Dec qtr 1857 district of Keynsham 5c 683). This is the same district that Sholto was born. However, he seems to have changed his name to Charles William by 1861. He is said to have been a tea planter in Ceylon.
