NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Col. Henry Bethune Patton

Pix & notes at: http://www.stokestmary.net/ssmpic4.htm

From Website: http://www.stokestmary.net/historyssm.htm
During the 1850's, Captain Thomas Patton, R.N. (no relation to the American general) acquired both Stoke House and Stoke Court, together with a large farming estate, and for the next 60 years his family's name was to be as closely linked with Stoke St. Mary as was the name of Portman with neighbouring parishes to the south. Captain Patton preferred to live at his mansion in Bishops Hull, but allowed Stoke House to be used by a succession of his children, including his son Colonel Henry Patton.

As commander of the Volunteer Reserve, Colonel Henry Patton achieved local fame for the mock battles he organised at Orchard Portman; and among his many services to the community, he became first chairman of the Parish Meeting in 1894, and first president of the Stoke St. Mary and Thurlbear Cricket Club, founded at The Half Moon one April evening in 1910.

Notes from "Wise Men from the West" by Thomas Lionel Patton (Nephew)

After seeing service in the Indian Mutiny, Henry devoted himself with remarkable keenness to the organisation of the Auxiliary Forces of West Somerset for about fifty years. His efforts were recognised, and he received the local rank of Brigadier-General, and was made a C.B. In his eighthieth and last year he was fervently addressing recruiting meetings in view of the outbreak of the Great War.

Henry's maternal grandfather married a daughter of John Walter, founder of "The Times" neswpaper. Henry's 1st cousin 1x removed was Emma Alice Margaret Tennant, who married the British Prime Minister, Herbert H. Asquith. She was better known as Lady Margot Asquith.

Another cousin married a grandson of Poet Laureate, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and another married the author, Ian Fleming, famous for his James Bond 007 novels. See John Walter's notes for further details.

Henry's 1st cousin 1x removed was Emma Alice Margaret Tennant, who married the British Prime Minister, Herbert H. Asquith. She was better known as Lady Margot Asquith.

Edward Innes Pocock

Notes from Theodore Innes Pocock, Nicholas Estlin Innes Pocock and Celia Coleman (nee Pocock):
Edward was a Captain of R.A.S.C. Scottish Rugby Football XY 1877, and was also a great horseman.

He was one of the pioneers to Mashonaland, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and was with the Pioneer Corp, C. Troop, recruited in Cape Town by Cecil John Rhodes. They were sent to Rhodesia as an advance party to secure the country before the pioneer column of women and children arrived.

Edward wrote a series of letters to his mother, which are now preserved in the Rhodesian Archives. They were first given to the author, Robert Cary, by Edward's great niece, Celia. Robert used the letters as part of the research for his book, 'The Pioneer Corps', published by Galaxie Press, Salisbury, Rhodesia in 1975. The book contains a comprehensive list of mini biographies on the members of the Rhodesian Pioneer Corps and their descendants. It is now out of print, but some details can be found HERE. One copy of the book, and photocopies of the letters, are now in the posession of Celia's brother, Christopher Pocock.

Edward is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in what is now Harare, Zimbabwe.

A detailed article about Edward can be found at Clifton RFC History. The website covers the history of the Clifton RFC up to the present day, and is set to become a book by Patrick Casey, Richard Hale and Tony Page. Published by Redcliffe Press in December 2008.
