NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Mr Lyon

At present, we do not know the identity of this person. However, we know that he was resident in Jamaica from c.1796 to c.1803, when he had at least two children, Mary & Gilbert. Gilbert's first son was named James, born 1824 at Edinburgh, Scotland. Possibly after his father. If so, his parents could be James & Margaret, below:

GILBERT LYON
Birth: 02 SEP 1774 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Father: JAMES LYON
Mother: MARGARET SMELLIE

Other possible connections: http://genforum.genealogy.com/lyon/messages/2612.html
The above website has the transcipt of a will of William Lyon of Scotland, Jamaica & London, who died 1799. He leaves an annual amount of £300 to his unmarried nephew, William Lyon, of Hanover, Jamaica. The amount is to be paid for a term of 5 years, and then William is to receive all the residue from his Estate for the term of his natural life. At the nephew's death, the estate is left to his wife and children.

William the nephew was born 11 Oct 1774 in Glasgow. His parents were Gilbert Lyon and Janet Finlayson. It seems likely that Gilbert (father of William) could be a brother of James, who married Margaret Smellie. However, if this were true, it follows that Gilbert & James were both brothers of William (author of the will). It seems odd then that William would not mention any nephews via his "brother" James.

NOTE: The Priory (see 1841) was built in 1832 by the George family and was later the home of the Fry family (of Fry's chocolates) for over 50 years. The house has a splendid Orangery, built shortly after the house itself.

Col. Henry Bethune Patton

Pix & notes at: http://www.stokestmary.net/ssmpic4.htm

From Website: http://www.stokestmary.net/historyssm.htm
During the 1850's, Captain Thomas Patton, R.N. (no relation to the American general) acquired both Stoke House and Stoke Court, together with a large farming estate, and for the next 60 years his family's name was to be as closely linked with Stoke St. Mary as was the name of Portman with neighbouring parishes to the south. Captain Patton preferred to live at his mansion in Bishops Hull, but allowed Stoke House to be used by a succession of his children, including his son Colonel Henry Patton.

As commander of the Volunteer Reserve, Colonel Henry Patton achieved local fame for the mock battles he organised at Orchard Portman; and among his many services to the community, he became first chairman of the Parish Meeting in 1894, and first president of the Stoke St. Mary and Thurlbear Cricket Club, founded at The Half Moon one April evening in 1910.

Notes from "Wise Men from the West" by Thomas Lionel Patton (Nephew)

After seeing service in the Indian Mutiny, Henry devoted himself with remarkable keenness to the organisation of the Auxiliary Forces of West Somerset for about fifty years. His efforts were recognised, and he received the local rank of Brigadier-General, and was made a C.B. In his eighthieth and last year he was fervently addressing recruiting meetings in view of the outbreak of the Great War.

Henry's maternal grandfather married a daughter of John Walter, founder of "The Times" neswpaper. Henry's 1st cousin 1x removed was Emma Alice Margaret Tennant, who married the British Prime Minister, Herbert H. Asquith. She was better known as Lady Margot Asquith.

Another cousin married a grandson of Poet Laureate, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and another married the author, Ian Fleming, famous for his James Bond 007 novels. See John Walter's notes for further details.

Major Bethune "Peter" Minet Patton

Bethune, known as Peter, has been credited for introducing ice hockey to Great Britain. He was president of the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1914 and was vice president on three separate occasions between 1910 to 1924. He also became the first President of the British Ice Hockey Association in 1914 and held this position for over 20 years. The "Patton Cup" has been awarded to the winner of the annual Varsity match between Cambridge and Oxford since 1927. He was elected into the British Hall of Fame in 1950 in honour of his ice hockey achievements.

Notes from "Wise Men from the West" by Thomas Lionel Patton (grandson)
Thomas joined the Royal Navy at the early age of 12 or 13, and made his maiden voyage, as a midshipman, in November 1805. His ship met the Victory returning from Trafalgar with Nelson's body on board. After a naval engagement at Mauritius, during the Napolenic Wars, he was captured by the French, who did not ill-treat him, but made him cook for them.

He retired early, married in 1819, and settled down at Bishops Hull House, near Taunton, Somerset, where his nine children were born. He lived here for over 50 years until his death in 1976. He was remembered as a simple and very kindly old man, whom the neighbourhood regarded with sincere affection.

Charles Steuart Betton

In 1914, Charles produced a publication entitled “Some descendants of Edward Fripp, gent, of Chitterne, Wiltshire 1638 (north west migration)". The whereabouts of this document are presently unknown, but it mentions a John Frippe 1496 as occurring in Inquisition re. Bratton, Wiltshire, 7 miles NW of Chitterne.

Charles has also published research into his Betton ancestors, and other journals, including one about The "Aleppo Merchant" Inn (Wales). See here

Charles is also mentioned in the obituary of Reginald Innes Pocock, in relation to Scorpians, Spiders, and Solpugas collected by Charles Steuart Betton in British East Africa. (Reginald was a great nephew of Mary Anne Pocock, who married Charles' cousin, Rev Samuel Charles Fripp)

Details of Charles' birth and parents appears on the British Library website. See the India Records section.
