Leslie Chatfield

An article published in the New York Times 27 Nov 1911 describes how Jose met her father for the first time, and says that she also announced her marriage to Leslie Chatfield two or three weeks earlier. Her marriage was actually registered in March, several months earlier.

However, the article gives a description of Leslie as follows...
Leslie Chatfield, an Englishman, is a nephew of Admiral Chatfield retired of the British Navy. It says Leslie's father, who recently died, was Colonel of a company of Hussars during the Boer war. It then describes Leslie as a young man who has considerable property in Australia, where he operates large sheep ranches.

He met Jose while she was playing at the Alhambra in London, about two weeks before she sailed for America. He proposed to her soon after they met, and they married before she sailed to America. In November 1911, they were both living in the Hotel Cumberland at New York, and this is where she met her real father for the first time.

The Admiral Chatfield mentioned in the article was possibly Admiral Alfred John Chatfield, born 27 Aug 1831 at Stratford, Salisbury, Wiltshire. However, none of his brothers appear to have had a son named Leslie. Alfred John's only son, Alfred Ernle Montacute Chatfield, 1st Baron Chatfield, was also Admiral of the Fleet in 1930.

The first names of Leslie's brothers are similar to to those of the Admirals, (Alfred, Ernest & Montague) so they are probably related somehow.

Charlotte Josephine Collins (Cooney)

Actress with stagename "Jose Collins"

She was named after her father, Jose Van den Berg, who was the conductor of an orchestra in New York, and director of the Van den Berg opera company of New York. He is said to have briefly been married to her mother, singer Lottie Collins, and then separated shortly after Josephine was born. It is not yet known if Lottie & Jose did actually marry.

The New York Times reported on 27 Nov 1911, that Jose Collins had just met her real father for the first time. She was then performing at the Winter Garden, New York, and had just announced her recent marriage to Leslie Chatfield, a nephew of Admiral Chatfield.

A full account of her life can be found in her bigraphy "The Maid of the Mountains". It does not name her father, but says she is of Spanish & Jewish blood.

See mini biography and links at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jose_Collins#

She was probably registered in England as: Josephine Collins Collins. Sep qtr 1887 Whitechapel, London 1c 325. This is also where her assumed sister, Lottie Lucia Van den Berg, was registered two years earlier.

Jose was probably given the middle name Collins, so that if/when her mother married, she could change her surname and still retain the name Collins.

No census records for 1891 or 1901 have been found for Charlotte or her parents, but she was probably living in Chicago or New York at these times.

3rd Marriage - 1939 Dec qtr Surrey N.W - Charlotte J. Innes-Ker & Gerald B. Kirkland

It is possible that Jose had a daughter in Dec qtr 1903 - Lucia Cleopatra COLLINS - Islington 1b 378. The names are of her two sisters, but at present this is pure speculation. A Doris Collins was raised by foster parents in Colchester, who was said to be the illegitimate daughter of an actress. Doris was said to have been born in May 1904, but perhaps this is the date her foster parents gave her.

The Times - 14 Jan 1959
HUSBAND OF MISS JOSE COLLINS DEAD
Dr. Gerald B. Kirkland, husband of the late Jose Collins, the musical comedy actress, was found dead yesterday in a gas- filled room at his home in High Road, Loughton. Essex. He was 61. His wife died on December 6. Dr. Kirkland first asked his wife to marry him when he was a young medical student and she was already a " star." He waited over 20 years until 1936 before he was in a position to marry her. He was her third husband. During the Second World War, when he was a major in the R.A.M.C., she worked voluntarily at hospitals where he was stationed.

The Times - 17 Jan 1959
LUDICROUS ' GENEROSITY OF DOCTOR
INQUEST ON MISS JOSE COLLINS'S HUSBAND
At an inquest at Walthamstow. Essex, yesterday, on Dr. Gerald Kirkland, aged 61, whose wife, Miss Jose Collins, died last month, Mr. H. H. Kenshole, the Coroner, recorded a verdict that he took his own life. His body was found in a gas-filled room at his home at Loughton, Essex, on Tuesday.
Mr. Derek Kirkland, of Lawrence Road, South Norwood. S.E.. said that his brother had about four days in bed over Christmas because of heart trouble. Asked by the Coroner if he understood his brother had experienced a good deal of financial worry recently, Mr. Kirkland said: "He did not discuss that with me but I knew he had financial worries. He was ludicrously generous."
Recording the verdict, the Coroner said: "He lost his wife about a month ago and that, coupled, perhaps, with other worries or other concerns, has led him to take his life." Referring to a note found beside the body, the Coroner said: "He speaks in a disparaging way of the act of suicide but makes it quite clear that that was his intention." His note certainly did not indicate any unsoundness of mind. '

Jose Van den Berg

Jose was a well known conductor of orchestras in New York, and director of operas.

He is said to have married Lottie Collins, and then separated in 1887, shortly after the birth of their daughter, Jose Collins. No record has been found for their marriage, and it seems unlikely, as Jose was not given her father's surname. However, it is thought that they had a previous daughter, Lottie Lucia Van den Berg, in 1885.

He met his daughter, Jose, for the first time in November 1911. She was performing at the Winter Garden, New York, and living at the Hotel Cumberland with her recent husband, Leslie Chatfield.

Charlotte "Lottie" Louisa Collins

Known by her stage name "Lottie Collins", she was a well known singer and dancer, who was most famous for singing Tar-ra-ra-boom-der-ay!.

After her marriage to Stephen Cooney, she married Music Hall lyricist James William Tate.

A photo of Lottie and the following mini biography is shown here:
Born in London in 1866, Lottie first appeared as a skipping rope dancer in 1877. She worked with her two younger sisters for a couple of years as 'The Three Sisters Collins' and performed in plays and pantomimes. She was best known for her success with the song 'Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay', and nothing else in her career came close to its success. However, at this time before recording or broadcasting, a career could be built on a single song, and audiences came to hear it. Collins worked for many years before and after 'Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay' made her famous. She was a singer, dancer and comedian, and ran her own variety company. She married three times and died aged only 44 in 1910. Her daughter, Jose Collins, became a famous musical comedy star.

Stephen Patrick Cooney

English reports show his first name as Stephen, but he is also named as Samuel P. Cooney in several American newspapers of the period. However, The New York Times reports on 7 September 1902, that he recently died in Saratoga, leaving his property to his sister, Mary A. Roskopf, to be held in trust for his daughter, Helena Cleopatra Cooney. His wife, Lottie Collins, is not mentioned in his will, and has sent a cablegram to A.H. Hummel asking him to contesting the will.

In October 1880, S.P. Cooney is shown as an agent for Frank Frayne, and was residing at the upmarket Clinton House hotel in Ithaca, New York. Frank Frayne was an American theatrical marksman, whose career ended in November 1882 when he accidentally shot dead his intended 2nd wife onstage at the Coliseum in Cincinnati.

S.P. is claimed to be the father of Jose Collins, but he was actually her step-father, and is noted as such in her biography "A Maid of the Mountains". Her real father was the New York music conductor & director, Jose Van den Berg. It is not certain if he was ever married to her mother, but they separated shortly after Jose Collins was born. He stayed in New York, while mother and baby returned to England in 1887.

The mother, singer Lottie Collins, returned to America in 1890, and this is probably when she met S.P. Cooney, who was acting as her agent. During a tour with the Howard Anthenaeum Company, the train was snowbound for seven days. Three of which the train was lost, until finally located between Denver and Salt Lake City. During this three day spell of uncertainty, S.P. proposed to her, and she accepted. They married soon after the train returned to St Louis.

This was not the only troublesome voyage for the couple, as they were quarantined on the ship Normannia in 1992 while returning to New York from England. The passenger list at Ellis Island shows Mr & Mrs S.P. Cooney arriving in New York, Sep 1892. There are several news reports of the arrival. The ship was quarantined because of an outbreak of cholera. They mention that Mrs S.P. Cooney is the entertainer known as Lottie Collins. One report explains how a fight erupted over food shortage. It says that Mr Cooney reached for his English Bulldog pistol.

His age on the passenger list is given as 45, which would put his birth around 1847. However, Lottie's age is given as 32, but should be about 27, so we can't rely on this info. His occupation is given as merchant, and she is a merchant's wife. However, these occupations are also given to almost all the other passengers. Daughter Jose does not appear to be with them, so she was probably left in Chicago, which is given as their last place of residence. There are other S.P. Cooney's arriving at New York on other dates with different ages. Some show the occupation as Insurance, so are probably another person.

Cleopatra "Helena" Cooney

Cleo was born deaf and dumb. She is mentioned in her step-sister's (Jose Collins) biography "A Maid of the Mountains". She says their mother spent hundreds of pounds trying to cure her, and that she was eventually able to speak.

In 1901 she can be found in a deaf & dumb school at 19 Goldsmid Road, Brighton, West Sussex. It shows her as Cleopatra Cooney, Pupil, 10, b. London (deaf & dumb)
