NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Notes

John Bishop Estlin

John Bishop Estlin was an eye specialist. In 1812 he formed an ophthalmic dispensary in Bristol, which he ran until his death in 1855.

Like his father, he was also a prominent Unitarian and keenly interested in social reform. He became interested in the abolition of slavery after a visit by Samuel May in 1843, and later became leader of the Garrison party in England, named after the United States abolitionist who published an anti-slavery journal.

He and his daughter Mary visited America in 1867 to help the cause.

See Dictionary of National Biography for further details.

Mary Anne Estlin

Mary fought for the causes of Anti Slavery and Womens Rights Activist.

OBITUARY from: The Shield, , vol. V, no. 60 (December 1902)
see: http://oassis.gcal.ac.uk/teaching/historyweb/cdromteaching/WOMEN/hannam/text/han15vi.htm

We have to record, with deepest regret, the death of one of the most devoted pioneers of the Abolitionist movement, Miss Mary Anne Estlin, which took place at her residence, 36, Upper Belgrave Road, Clifton, on November 14th.
The news of her death was sent by Miss. M. Priestman to Mrs. Josephine Butler in the following words:-
"Our dearly loved friend, and invaluable helper, Miss Estlin, left us yesterday, and we cannot but feel deeply our great loss, while rejoicing in her rest and release from suffering. Her life has been one long service for others. During her long illness she was busy to the last day of her life, planning for the good of her friends, and of the causes she held so dear. "
Mrs. Butler writes as follows of her beloved friend and fellow worker:-
"Mary Estlin has gone to her rest; she joined our early group of women workers in 1870, and never ceased her quiet labours for us till the close of her life. She was one of the silent workers. She never made speeches, never took outwardly a prominent part; but she was always at her post as a quiet and constant seconder of our every effort. For many years she aided most generously, from her own modest means, certain of our Abolitionists abroad, whose value she recognized, and who were sometimes hard pressed in their circumstances.
"She was one of the New England group of the Abolitionists of Negro Slavery in America, a friend of Wm. Lloyd Garrison, Samuel May, and others. She frequently sent on to me letters full of interest written to herself from these men. She had imbibed the true Abolitionist, Anti-slavery spirit from her youth. She was a singular union of extreme modesty and pluck. Mrs. Harriet Martineau, who knew her well, once wrote to me of her: 'That frail little creature, whom it seems a breath of wind might blow into space, is ready at any moment to march up to the mouth of the guns, knowing she will be blown to pieces the next minute.'
"I like to think that Mary Estlin is working still (for she loved work), freed from the weakness and limitations of our earthly state. "
