NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Lavinia Florence Coates

Lavinia's notes will be added shortly. She wrote several articles for magazines and local papers.
One item, about her father's car, was presented to "The Lady" magazine (date unknown), and can be read here.

Thomas Charles Hastings Coates

Thomas died, aged 15, whilst under anaesthetic during an operation to remove his tonsils

Notes from Ross Vicars:
This photo of Tommy appeared with the report on the Coroner's Inquiry and the Obituary that apeared in the Tonbridge Free Press on April 11th 1930. I would suggest that they would have used the most recent photo available and given that he started a new school (King's School Canterbury) in January 1930, it is likely that a photo would have been taken then. Tommy died under anaesthetic - the family were always reluctant to discuss the exact cause but the Coroners Inquest described it as a "status lymphaticus". Whatever, his death had a long and deep impression on Percy. Incidentally, the report refers to him as "Thomas Charles Hastings Coates".

Thomas Coates

Notes from Ross Vicars:
The mother of Thomas Coates was Matilda Coats - born in Redford Sussex in 1810 and died after 1880. She was unmarried when she had Thomas and he was raised by his Grandparents, Richard and Obedience Coats.

Thomas left Cowden in 1881 and started his own Tannery business, moving to Tonbridge a few years later. The business was still in existence in Tonbridge in the late 1950's, being run by Percy and Nelson (son of Jabez). The closure of the business was enforced by their reluctance to move away from the manufacture of their traditional wares - slippers, mittens, gloves, leggings, waistcoats, jerkins etc. - when they should really have been moving towards fine leather goods.

Spencer Coates

UNCLE SPENCER an article by his niece Lavinia Coates

Uncle Spencer was the 3rd son to reach manhood. After surviving the rigours of childhood and a sparse education he went to work on the railway. The Southern Railway did not hold his interest for much longer than the teenage period, although he was the youngest guard on the railway at that time.

He made friends with some adventurous fellows who boarded at Eton House, which was one of the residential houses attached to Tonbridge School, known as The Big School. Their academic standards fell below that which was required by a Public School and so they were diverted into more practical and less scholarly activities, such as farming, forestry and, above all, likely candidates for colonisation of the growing British Empire. Uncle Spencer joined a party of the Eton House boys who were to seek their fortune in a far country. He was an opportunist and jumped on the bandwagon of the fortune hunters, the Gold Diggers in California, and finally, the Klondike in the Yukon in Northern Canada.

Unfortunately news of his adventures was not sufficiently publicised by his family here in England, as he could not have reached the status of a successful man, or amassed a fortune, otherwise he would have been highly acclaimed by his mother, who was very thrifty. His father, who was a successful businessman, could not accept him and, possibly in his eyes, he rated as a failure.

When he did eventually come home, it was on leave from the Army when he had joined the Canadian 1st World War contingent. I was only a child then and can remember a clear image of him as a large jolly man in a uniform. He bounced me on his knee as he laughed so merrily, I wanted him to stay with us all the time, but I never saw him again.

Over the years my father referred to him as "That Spencer has run out of money again. I suppose we shall have to send him another cheque." That was after Grandpa died, I don't know what happened while he was alive. My father never mentioned him to me but that ride on his knee left me with a lasting impression of a jolly man who made me feel very happy. He ended his life in Canada and was over 80 years of age when he died.

William Garnett

Note from Edith - Nov 2006:
My great-great grandfather Garnett emigrated to Canada in 1830. His son, the first William Garnett was born in England but I don't have the location. Three more boys and a girl were born at the farm on Hwy. 28 outside Peterborough. The youngest son James was the ancestor of Angela Carter. He was the last one to leave the farm and they all went west except my great-grandfather who married Jane Calvert and he died at 37 from Typhoid Fever and left her with 4 young children. One of them was Wm. Garnett II. He married Edith Roberts - my mother's mother and my grandmother Garnett. My mother's brother was Wm. Garnett the III and livied to 101. He only had girls so the name has died out here.
