NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Vero Charles Driffield

Vero, with his partner, Ferdinand Hurter, invented the first system of measuring light sensitivity in photographic film. It was known as the Hurter and Driffield curve and was later replaced with the current A.S.A. and D.I.N. film speeds. He was awarded the Medal of the Progress by the Royal Company of photography in 1898.

An article appears in issue 99 of Photographica World, by Ron Callender, who researches Vero Charles Driffield, his daughter and his professional life. p. 31

Charles Edward Driffield

Charles was appointed Deputy Coroner for West Derby, Lancashire on 1st July 1851, and was elected as Coroner later that month. He was previously articled as a solicitor to his brother, Walter.

Charles continued research into the Driffield genealogy after the death of his brother, Vero. It was Charles who discovered that his branch of the Driffield family came directly from Escrick, Yorkshire, and not from Easingwold, as had been previously thought. Like his brother, he also died shortly after commencing his research. His work was later continued by his nephew, Frederick Vero Driffield, and then undertaken by Charles' grandson, Edward Bowles Driffield, who published, in 1907, his compilation of Driffield family History 1537 - 1903.

Info from Edgar Gregory: Apr 2009
Charles Edward was a Solicitor and Attorney and became County Coroner of Lancashire.
He was born at Prescot in 1823 and was baptised there on 4 Jun 1823. His father, Rev. Charles George Thomas Driffield was Vicar of Prescot from 1815 to 1848. His mother was Letitia Kemball.

ABODES:
1901 (Marriage) Hampstead, London.
1903 (Kelly's) Castle Cottage, Castle Street, Portchester, Hampshire.

Lived next to Portchester Castle in Hampshire after his marriage. He later emigrated to Canada where he painted scenes of the Klondike gold rush and the lives of natives in Canada. Many of his illustrations were published in the "London Graphic" magazine.

Charles followed in the footsteps of his father & grandfather by having his paintings exhibited around the world.
