NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Martha Fripp

Age at death 55 yrs 5 months 16 days (SCHG)

NOTE: Martha is sometimes shown with a middle initial "S". This appears to have been taken from records at the South Carolina Department of Archives & History. The records for children of John & Martha show Martha S & John B (their marriages are included). However, the same records printed in the South Carolina Historical & Genealogical Magazine, Vol.23, published 1922, show them as Martha spin & John bach.

Elizabeth (widow Grieve, formerly widow Bell)

Elizabeth was a widow of Lady's Island when she married John Fripp III

John's 2nd marriage. (Ancestry.com)
FRIPP, John of St. Helena Island, planter, & Elizth. Grive of Lady's Island, Parish of St. Helena, widow, 23 Sep 1776; Thomas Bell of Lady's Island, Trustee; G. Christie, Eliz. Tobias, wit. Misc. Rec. RR: 368-371

She appears to be Elizabeth Bell, a widow of Lady's Island, who married Joseph Grieve 22 March 1770. The marriage was witnessed by Allen and David McKee, who may have been children of John Fripp's sister Mary. See notes for Mary, wife of David McKee. (Not Mary, sister of John Fripp III, although could be.)

William Fripp

Notes from Marshall B. Shore:
Married 1st, Tabitha Eddings, spinster of Edisto Island and 2nd, Magdalen Meggett, of St. Helena, d. 15 Sept 1794, age 51 (should be 61?)

SCHM 22:121 “Marriage & Death Notices from the City Gazette” Compiled by Mabel L. Webber (Ed-180)
Fri., Nov. 14, 1794 - Departed this life, on the 4th of November, and in the 64th year of his age, Mr. William Fripp, Sen. Of St. Helena. The loss of his affectionate wife soon bore him to his grave. He was universally beloved by all who knew him, and his death is equally regretted; he was a tender and affectionate husband, an indulgent parent, and a loving brother.

William inherited 240 acres of land on St. Helena Island from his grandfather, John Fripp Sr., in 1743. This was half of a tract where John had previously lived before he wrote his will. The other half was left to William's brother Paul. William and Paul also inherited a 500 acre tract from John's hunting island (probably Fripp Island) to be shared between them.

William and Magdalen had a son named John Hamilton Fripp b. 1775. He was known as Hamilton Fripp, and is buried in the Hamilton Fripp Cemetery. Records (below) show the oldest person recorded in this cemetery is William Fripp born about 1730. This appears to be the father of John Hamilton Fripp, although his birth is recorded as 1732.

The cemetery may have been built about the time of William's death (1794). Magdalen died 2 months before William, but is not shown in this cemetery. She was probably buried in the Meggett cemetery. This will be investigated.

Burials in Hamilton Fripp Graveyard (Courtesy Ed A. Fripp III)
Located off of Seaside Road toward Pine Island, NW St Helena Island, Beaufort, S.C.
John Hamilton Fripp, d: September, 1828, age 53 “He feared God only”
Ethelbert Fripp, d: August 20, 1840, age 22 yrs. 5 mo.
Wm. P. Fripp, b: 9 Dec., 1798, d: October 8, 1828
James Fripp, b: 15 March, 1777, d: June 28, 1811
Mary Fripp, b: 3 Dec., 1778, d: September 5, 1817
William Fripp, d: November 4, 1794 age 64

He is shown on the 1800, 1810 & 1820 census. The 1820 census shows he was over 45 years old and the household included the following:
1 male over 45 (This must surely be Hamilton)
1 female 26 - 45 (This is probably his wife as there are two young children in the household)
1 male 16 - 26 (Probable son, and closer to 16 than 26)
1 male 0 - 10 (Probable son)

Martha Fripp

This record has changed. Martha was shown as married to Thomas Fripp b.11 Apr 1761 (RIN 1411). I'm not sure where that marriage was found, but most records show that Thomas married Martha HANN, which I have now changed to.
