The Fripp family of South Carolina

Notes

William Fripp (See Notes)

This William could be a brother or uncle of John Fripp Snr., or a brother of John the immigrant. Alternatively, he could be a son of John Snr's marriage to Elizabeth McPherson. It is known that John Snr only had one child (John Jr.) with his wife Sarah, and no mention is made of any children with Elizabeth.

It is also said that a newspaper report in 1704 or 1707 (origin being sought) tells of a dispute involving William Fripp, a tavern proprietor of Charleston. This could be him. Some researchers claim that two brothers, John and William, were the first Fripps to settle in South Carolina. Hence, this could be an uncle of John Snr., rather than his brother.

It is possible that this William is an ancestor of Paul Archibald Fripp. A list was drawn by Rebecca Margaret Fripp (nee Linley), who married Paul's grandson. The list shows a William Fripp married to a Hamilton. It has not been possible to verify any of the information, but it could offer an alternate lineage to the version shown on this website. The list and an analysis can be found HERE

John Edwin Fripp

John Edwin Fripp, son of Wm & Eliza born on November 28th, 1831
Baptized by the Rev David McElleran
NOTE: The "d" in Edwin is not visible, but we know this is the correct person. (See below)

Biographical Note from John Edwin Fripp papers (see website for full details): http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/f/Fripp,John_Edwin
John Edwin Fripp was born November 26, 1831, on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. He was a descendant of John Fripp, who came to America in 1670.

Fripp owned several plantations on St. Helena Island. He also owned a plantation at Chechessee Bluff ("The Bluff") in Beaufort County, South Carolina, which he purchased in 1857. While Fripp maintained his family and most of his slaves and other possessions at the Bluff, he seems to have spent a good deal of his time traveling among his holdings. To these journeys were added trips to his summer homes in "The Village" on St. Helena Island and in Grahamville, near the Bluff.

Fripp apparently served in some capacity during the Civil War, through which he managed to hold onto his land. After the war, he paid off his debts and continued farming on a much reduced scale. Starting in the late 1880s, Fripp, while continuing to farm, worked as overseer for the Chelsea Plantation Club, where his duties included supplying game for the hunt and bringing poachers to justice. He died on May 22, 1906.

Notes from John Tison:
In 1856 John purchased the Chechessee Bluff plantation of 560 acres on Okatee Creek across the Broad River from Beaufort and moved there with 75 slaves from his St. Helena plantation, Lonesome Hill, which he kept until the Civil War. He and his family maintained a close relationship with the family of his deceased brother, Thomas Benjamin. John Edwin Fripp is buried at Talwin Grove, Okatee.

After the deaths of his children, Alice and Daniel, the Chechessee Bluff plantation was split up into small tracts and sold for summer houses.

Another Good Man, and Old Veteran Called Hence.

At 2:30 A.M. May 22nd., our old friend, Mr. John E. Fripp, of the Okatie neighbourhood, received his last summons, and has entered into life everlasting. In his person he exemplified a type of the old regime-planter, Confederate Veteran, and true Christian gentleman. His hospitallity was noted, and has been experienced by many of both races. His illness, which lasted several months, was borne with patient fortitude, and was lightened by the loving care and constant attendance of his devoted children. Our hearts go out to them in sympathy with their great bereavement; may they be led to look for consolation to Him who doeth all things well.

Mr. Fripp, eldest son of the late W.B. Fripp, of St. Helena Island, was born on that island 75 years ago, the family are amongst our most ancient and well known families of this coast. In 1853 he was married to Miss Isabel Jenkins. Soon after, he removed to the Okatee section, where he resided ever since, except while refugeeing during the war. Mrs. Fripp was a lovely lady, and was sincerely mourned, her death occurred 23 years ago.

The married life of these two was a happy one, and their union was blessed with a number of children, of whom eight survive, these are Misses Emie and Alice Fripp, and Messrs Julian J., Edgar W., Daniel P., Thomas S., Charles B., and Robert L. Fripp, all highly esteemed and useful citizens of our county.

The funeral, which took place at the Okatee Episcopal Church on the morning of the 23, was well attended despite the severely inclement weather. Many friends and relatives came from quite distant points to points to pay their last tribute of respect. Rev. Mr. Nungazer, of Ridgeland, conducted the funeral services. The grave was completely covered with beautiful flowers arranged in wreaths and crosses. -B.

Daniel died unmarried. As a young man he suffered a severe sunstroke, which affected his mind. Always in a good humor, he was beloved by children, was an avid reader of the Bible and the [Episcopal] Book of Common Prayer, and on Sundays usually kept to himself, quoting long passages and Psalms in a loud voice.

Edgar Walter Fripp

From Family Bible of William B. Fripp, 1835 Issue
Courtesey of Virginia Fripp-Whatley-Shaffer, via Ed A. Fripp III

Edgar Walter Fripp, son of John E. and Isabella P Fripp. Born on 16th July, 1857
Baptized by the Rev. Wm Johnson on St Helena

Notes from James Tison:
Edgar Walter Fripp was a minor in 1861 and had previously inherited a Fripp plantation of 1,248 acres on St. Helena Island. On it is a well-known Fripp house built about 1800 (builder unknown) which still stands in 1983. At the beginning of the Civil War, Union troops moved in to "safeguard" the property. Early in 1892 Edgar was able to legally regain 732 acres of his original inheritance, including the house, and lived there for more than 20 years until he sold the place for a hunting preserve. He married twice, (1) Lilly Ellis, and (2) Martha, daughter of Daniel and Ann LaRoche Jenkins. She was a first cousin of Lillie Jenkins who married his brother Julian J. Fripp. Edgar died in 1930 and left one son, Edgar, who married Mary Dougan. He died at Burton, SC in 1960 and left three sons, all of whom went to California. Edgar Walter was one of only three pre-War families able to redeem land on St. Helena and the last of them to own property there. Thus the Fripps, who prior to 1861 owned a major portion of the Island, exited St. Helena.

Obituary from Beaufort Gazette 3 January 1929, p.1.

MR. E.W. FRIPP, Sr. BURIED SUNDAY

Died Sunday Morning After Much Suffering for the Past Several Months

ONE OF OLDEST CITEZENS

Fripp's Were Among the First Settlers in this Section.

Loved By All

After suffering intense pain for the past two months, being confined to his bed during that time, Mr. E.W. Fripp, Sr., died at his home about three miles from Beaufort Sunday morning, December 30, at 3 o'clock, at the age of 71 years. He had been in bad health for over a year, but became worse about two months ago.

He was born at Okatie and spent 40 years on St. Helena Island before moving to his present home. The Fripp's date back for many generations and all through life they have all followed the example of their forefathers, which was honesty, living an upright life and kindness to all who need assistance. Nothing they possessed was too good for the most humble and needy human being and the passing of this good old citizen has cast a gloom over the entire community.

Mr. Fripp was twice married, his first wife was a Miss Ellis, who lived only a few years. His second wife, who was Miss Mattie Jenkins and one son, E.W. Fripp, Jr., four brothers, Charlie, Dannie, J.J. and R.L., one sister, Miss Alice Fripp, survive him. His widow, while attending her husband, suffered a stroke of paralysis about a month ago and is now seriously ill. Although she was in another room from her husband, she could not sleep during Saturday night; at 3 o'clock, withought anyone telling her, she began crying and said she knew her husband was dead and then went to sleep. She was reported today as resting as well as could be expected.

Mr. Fripp was one of Beaufort counties most successful farmers, having followed farming his entire life. In the death of Mr. Fripp, Beaufort has lost one of her oldest and most beloved citizens.

The funeral service was held in St. Helena Episcopal church, of which he was a member, conducted by Rev. R. Maynard Marshall. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, where a large gathering of friends and relatives had assembled to pay their last respects to this good old citizen of Beaufort.

The following were pallbearers; Messrs. E.B. Rodgers, John Parler, E.E. Heape, S.S. Stokes, Hal Wallace and Dr. C.G. Luther. The relatives have the sympathy of the people of Beaufort county.

Messrs. D.P. Legare and E.L. Jenkins and Miss Jenkins, of Charleston, attended the funeral.
