Charles Edward Fripp

Baptised by Rev. White

NOTE:
The book TOMBEE has Charles Edward married to Harriet Ann Croskeys, widow of Charles' brother Paul. However, this marriage is not shown among the records shown in the 1727 Fripp bible, owned by Miss Louise Fripp (Ed119b). Harriet is shown as Harriet Croskeys Fripp STOKES, widow of Paul Hamilton Fripp, departed this life at her home in Walterboro, S.C., on Nov 16, 1906. Buried in Magnolia cemetery, Charleston.

This would indicate that her 2nd husband was a Mr STOKES, not Charles Edward Fripp

Harriet Anne Crosskeys

The book TOMBEE has Paul's brother Charles Edward married to Harriet. perhaps she married charles after Edward died.

She is shown in the 1727 Fripp bible, owned by Miss Louise Fripp (Ed119b), as Harriet Croskeys Fripp STOKES, widow of Paul Hamilton Fripp, departed this life at her home in Walterboro, S.C., on Nov 16, 1906. Buried in Magnolia cemetery, Charleston.

This would indicate that her 2nd husband was a Mr STOKES.

Obituary (Courtesy of Edgar Allen Fripp III)
Edgar Allen Jordan Fripp

Columbia, S.C. - February 19, 1928. Funeral services for Edgar Allen Fripp, 65, retired Cotton Buyer, who died at 9:30 Sunday night at his home, 3207 Third Avenue, Shandon Annex, after a declining period of health for the last two years, will be held at his late residence on Third Avenue at 1 o’clock this afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Bouknight. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Fripp had made his home in Columbia for the last ten months, coming here from Anderson. He was a well known cotton man of the upper part of the State, and since his locating here had made many friends due to his many sterling attributes.

Besides his widow, who was before marriage, Miss Rebecca Linley of Charleston, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elliott L. McCants of Columbia and Mrs. David Lockerbie of Charlotte; five sons: Edgar A. Fripp, Jr., John L. Fripp, Archie L. Fripp and Robert L. Fripp, all of Columbia, and William E. Fripp of Sumter.

The Pallbearers will be: A. H. McWaters, S. Prevost, R.B. Linley, W. M. Bolin, A. C. DePass and Pierre LaBorde.

Rebecca Margaret Linley

Notes from Edgar Allen Fripp III (Grandson)
Rebecca mentioned that her husband was visited by 'Aunt' Laura, who showed him documents tracing his lineage back to John Fripp the immigrant. She promised to pass the papers on to him, but they ended up with a Mrs. Barnwell, in Beaufort, after her death. Rebecca further stated that in the year 1900, Evelyn Fripp, niece and daughter by adoption of William Oliver Perry Fripp, had shown her the original Land Grant of 1662, left to her by her father, on heavy parchment with the seal of Charles II.

Rebecca (Gen.IX) listed the following lineage (no dates):

Gen. I: John Fripp, widower from England via Barbados (1670?)
Gen.II: John Jr. married Jenkins
Gen.III: William married Hamilton
Gen.IV: John married Jenkins
Gen.V: William married Eddings
Gen.VI: William married Edwards, Rebecca
Gen.VII: Paul married Kugley, Jane
Gen.VIII: William married Jordan, Sarah
Gen.IX: Edgar married Linley, Rebecca

NOTE: Generations III to VI are different from the lineage shown on this website. We know that William (Gen.III) did not marry a Hamilton and there are not enough generations (above) for Paul to be born in 1811. However, William could be a son of the first John Fripp. I have put a detailed analysis of this tree HERE

Birth notice & obituary: (Courtesy of Edgar Allen Fripp III)
Rebecca Margaret Linely Fripp, born June 4, 1868, Charleston, S.C., eldest daughter of John William Linley and Ida Carpenter Linley of Charleston.

Rev. William James Edwards Fripp

Notes from Edgar Allen Fripp III:

William James Edwards Fripp, was born April 11,1835, and was baptized by the Rev. Aaron J. Brown, M.P. Church, December 2,1835

He became a Methodist Preacher in 1859-60. He was in North Carolina when the Civil War broke out, and was transferred immediately to Allendale, S.C. Family tradition has it that the family was 'dis-owned' when they joined the Methodist Church.

Martha Kugley, living in Charleston, took guardianship of her two grandsons, William James Edwards Fripp, and Edgar Thomas Riley Fripp. (see South Carolina Guardianship of 1827-1845). Edgar Fripp of St. Helena and Beaufort may have had original care of the two in that I have an old tin plate of Edgar upon which on the back is scratched such information.

From the family Bible of Edgar Allen Fripp & Rebecca Margarite Linley:
Rev. W.J.E. Fripp departed this life in June, 1872, aged 37 – after 6 years of affliction.

1860 Census: Town of Spartanburg, Spartanburg, South Carolina - 22 Jun 1860 - p.26
W.J.E. Fripp, 25, M, Meth. Clergyman, b. S.C.
Sarah A. Fripp, 23, F, (birthplace is unclear, but is not dittoed from all the S.C.'s above

Rev. Aaron Brown was of the Methodist Protestant Church, which had broken off from the main Methodist Church in the early 1830's.

Sarah Ann Jordan (See notes)

Sarah's mother is named on her death certificate as Sarah Shay, born in Ireland (full details below). The certificate details were given by her son, Edgar Allen Fripp, who may not have been aware of any confusion with his mother's birth.

Sarah Ann Shea (Shay) does appear to be her mother, but details on the 1860 & 1880 census returns appear to show some doubt.

In 1880 (see below), Sarah was living with Ed Jordan & his children by Sarah Ann Shea, but she is not listed as his daughter, her son is not listed as grandson, and her parents birthplace is incorrect. The census shows her parents were born in South Carolina, whereas her "brother" Ed Jordan Jr's entry shows his parents were born in Ireland.

Further doubt is found in the 1860 Census. Ed & Sarah's household, at Charleston, shows a Sarah Jordan, aged 24. If this was the wife of W.J.E. Fripp, why is her surname shown as Jordan, when it should be FRIPP? Sarah Ann Fripp (nee Jordan) is actually shown on a Census in Spartanburg with her husband. This is 200 miles away, so she would not have been listed on both records.

I believe all the evidence above shows that there were two Sarah Jordan's born about 1836, with a "father" Edward. Perhaps the other was a daughter of Edward's sister, Catherine.

Details from Edgar Allen Fripp III:
Register of the Rev. Paul Trapier: St. Stephens, St. Michaels, & Calvary (Episcopal Church): St. Stephens Chapel (James Island - Charleston), Sarah Ann Jordan, B: April 30, 1836; Baptized May 22, 1836, daughter of Edward and CATHERINE Jordan.

The following memoir, also supplied by Edgar Allen Fripp III, shows Sarah as 3rd daughter of Edward Jordan.

"Sarah Ann Jordan was third daughter of Edward Jordan, formerly from Took-Jac, where the Jordans fled from France at the revocation of the Edict of Nante." - Rebecca Margaret Linley Fripp

Rebecca married Sarah's son, Edgar Allen Jordan Fripp, and was grandmother of Edgar Allen Fripp III.

Rebecca's memoir also explains why her husband always stated, when asked where he was from, that he was a "Frenchman from Cork". The Jordan ancestors were apparently from a French Huguenot family group who had fled France about 1685, and maintained it a part of their heritage.

Further details from Edgar Allen Fripp III:

From the family Bible of Edgar Allen Fripp & Rebecca Margarite Linley:
Sarah Jordan, mother of E.A. Fripp, Sr., died at Spartanburg, S.C., Nov. (17), 1916 - her 81st. year.

Edgar found that Sarah Anne Jordan attended the Cumberland Methodist Church, where she is listed in Sunday School. This is also where her marriage notice to Rev. W.J.E. Fripp is listed.

Other details from Karl Plenge:
Karl is descended from Edward Watson Jordan, shown in the 1880 census above.
E.W. Jordan's mother was Sarah Ann Shea, who died in 1874. Ed had a sister, Catherine, born 1811 died 1874 (unmarried).

Another possible explanation:
A message at: http://www.jenforum.org/thigpen/messages/653.html contains the following details:

On Sep. 29, 1831, Thomas Moore left two sons, Thomas (age 8) and James (age 7) in the South Carolina Orphan House at Charleston. The boys were let out as indentured servants in 1835, Thomas to N.G. Allen as a bricklayer, and James to Edward Jordan as a sailmaker.........

The two Moore boys were adopted by Messrs Allen & Jordan a year before Sarah Jordan's birth. Was N.G. Allen an associate of Ed's ? If so, is it pure coincidence that Sarah gave the middle names Allen & Jordan to her first son, Edgar. It's not certain that this was the same Ed Jordan, but he was a sailmaker in Charleston at the right time.

A photograph of E. Jordan's sailmaking business has been supplied by Karl here The individuals and date are unknown but it was taken on a wharf in Charleston, probably in the time of Edward Watson Jordan.

Edward Watson Jordan's details are listed below. His tree, compiled by Karl Plenge, can be found here

Possible marriage, although they appear to be still in Ireland in 1837:

Guilliard Fripp

Copied by Edgar Allen Fripp III from the ‘Saddlebag Bible’ of W.J.E. Fripp:

(Guilliard), second son of Rev. W.J.E. and Sarah Ann Fripp was born on the 21st of March, 1867 in Charleston, S.C.

‘(Guilliard) son of W.J.E. and Sarah A. Fripp was baptized 3rd of April, 1867 by Rev. T.W. Larvis, Charleston, S.C.

‘(Guilliard) third child of W.J.E. and Sarah A. Fripp departed this life 2nd day of April, 1867, aged 13 days – Charleston, S.C.

It appears that Guilliard was baptised after he died, but before he was buried.
